UPI Number
A UPI Number is a bank-verified phone number identifier of your UPI ID. It allows you to receive money from users, regardless of the app they use. You can create up to 3 UPI numbers for a UPI ID. This can be your phone number or any 8–9 digit numeric ID you choose.
This is an extension of the Google Pay through phone number option that you find on your UPI app. This will allow anyone to send money from any UPI app.
Tip: By May 2022, you can't receive payments through your phone number unless you set your phone number as a UPI Number. However, you can continue to receive payments through your UPI ID or chathead.

To fix payment issues, invite the receiver to map their phone number with a UPI ID. You can try a different payment method like QR code or UPI ID. If the payment fails on Google Pay, you’ll get a prompt with the same information on the app.
Tip: To have them link their number to UPI, you can send them a message through WhatsApp.
Your UPI number creation depends on the readiness of the payment service provider you're using. You'll receive a notification when your UPI number is created. To check the status, go to the "Manage UPI IDs" section.
You might continue to receive notifications to create a UPI number in multiple places within the app. This is because the use of a UPI number becomes critical after phone number payments stop in May 2022.
The payment service provider used by the recipient might not be ready with the UPI number feature. Try to make the payment through your recipient’s UPI ID instead.
