You can use Gmail to check your spelling and grammar automatically as you write.

Check spelling & grammar

Important:

  • Suggestions are based on your text, and don't represent Google's views.
  • Spelling and grammar checks in Gmail may not be available in all languages.

As you type, Gmail automatically checks your text for mistakes and underlines words or phrases that need corrections.

  1. To view the suggestion, click the underlined word or phrase in your draft.
  2. To accept the suggestion, click it.
    • Or, to dismiss it, click Ignore .

Tips:

  • For common misspelled words, Gmail automatically corrects them.
  • To undo a change:
    • On Windows: Press Ctrl + Z.
    • On Mac: Press Cmd + Z.
    • On screen readers:
      1. To find underlined words, use your arrow keys.
      2. Tap Tab and then Enter.

Change settings for grammar, spelling & autocorrect

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Settings and then See all settings.
  3. At the top, click General.
  4. Update your settings for grammar, spelling, and autocorrect:
    • Turn Grammar suggestions on or off.
    • Turn Spelling suggestions on or off.
    • Turn Autocorrect on or off.
