You can customize how Gemini Apps respond to you if you add instructions. For example, you could create instructions so that Gemini would always:
- Start responses with a short summary
- Use bullet points for long paragraphs
Tip: If you’re not subscribed to a Google AI plan, you can still save info to get more helpful responses in Gemini Apps.
What you need
To add instructions for Gemini Apps, you need to:
- Sign in with a personal Google Account. This feature isn’t available when you sign in to a work, school, or supervised Google Account. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.
- Be subscribed to a Google AI plan. Learn how to upgrade to a Google AI plan.
Important: For now, this feature is:
- Not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
- Not available for Gems or in Live chats.
Add your instructions for Gemini
Important: Instructions for Gemini to forget or avoid topics in chats doesn’t always work perfectly. To make sure Gemini stops mentioning a topic, delete any chats about it from your Gemini Apps Activity.
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the bottom, click Settings & help
Personal Intelligence
- Personal Intelligence is only available when Gemini’s language is set to English. If it’s not, click Personal context instead. Learn how to change Gemini’s language.
- Click Add +.
- Enter the instructions you want Gemini Apps to apply to every chat.
- Click Submit.

- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the bottom, click Settings & help

- Find the instructions you want to view, edit, or delete.
- Click More

Turn your instructions for Gemini on or off
You can change whether Gemini Apps use your instructions at any time.
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
