Data processor mode is currently only available for users on managed ChromeOS devices in these countries.
Class Tools is a modern classroom management solution for ChromeOS that includes real-time instructional tools and device management capabilities, available with Google Workspace for Education Plus. With Class Tools, teachers can manage student devices during class, support bilingual and multilingual students, and cater to diverse learning styles—helping to keep students focused and engaged during class.
The core functionality of Class Tools is an Essential Service under ChromeOS data processor mode. Features include keeping students on task during a learning session by sharing and pinning content, such as websites, to students' screens on their devices. This eliminates distractions and keeps students focused by locking content, and preventing them from navigating to websites other than the ones specified by the teacher.
Additionally, Class Tools includes three features classified as Optional Services, which can be turned on or off by the admins:
- Live captions and translation of instructions
- Screen sharing
- Integration with Google Classroom
For more details on these Optional Service features, see Class Tools—Optional Service expansions.
This article is for administrators and end users who want to learn about what data is collected by Class Tools as an Essential Service and how it’s processed by Google.
Configurations and related articles
This is an Essential Service under data processor mode and is off by default. To use its features, admins have to turn it on and assign user roles—student or teacher.
Note: When first turning on Class Tools, both its Essential and Optional services are enabled. However, admins can turn off all three Optional Service features simultaneously using the Optional Services Master Switch, or they can turn off each feature individually through the Google Admin console, before they’re used by students.
For more information, including how to turn this service on or off, see Overview of Class Tools.
Data processed by this service
Class Tools collects and sends data to Google so that teachers can connect to students' devices to send web resources and track their progress.
