Class Tools—Optional Service expansions

Data processor mode is currently only available for users on managed ChromeOS devices in these countries.

Class Tools is a modern classroom management solution for ChromeOS that includes real-time instructional tools and device management capabilities, available with Google Workspace for Education Plus. With Class Tools, teachers can manage student devices during class, support bilingual and multilingual students, and cater to diverse learning styles—helping to keep students focused and engaged during class.

The core functionality of Class Tools is an Essential Service under ChromeOS data processor mode. For details on Essential Services features, see Class Tools.

Additionally, Class Tools includes three features classified as Optional Services, which can be turned on or off by the admin:

  1. Live captions and translation of instructions—Teachers can use real-time translatable captions to help language learners and students with hearing impairments. Translated content can be seen on the teacher or student devices, or both.
  2. Screen sharing—Teachers can remotely view students’ screens to check their progress during class. Teachers can also share a particular student’s work with the entire class.
  3. Integration with Google Classroom—Class Tools integrates with Google Workspace, allowing teachers to import groups of students from Classroom. Teachers can start class automatically using existing Google Classroom class rosters.

Note: When first turning on Class Tools, both its Essential and Optional services will be enabled. However, admins can turn off all three Optional Service features simultaneously using the Optional Services Master Switch, or they can turn off each feature individually through the Google Admin console, before they’re used by students.

This article is intended for admins and end users who want to learn about what data is collected by the Class Tools Optional Service features and how it’s processed by Google.
