About placements

Placements are an optional dimension that allow you to segment your ad performance reporting data without the need for additional ad units. Ad units are containers used to specify what types of ads are served and how users interact with them. Placements however, are decoupled from ad decisioning and can be used to report where or when ads are served. Ad units control demand and targeting based on mappings to mediation groups, whereas placements are designed to be used for inventory reporting.

Ad units vs placements

The core difference between ad units and placements is their purpose within the ad serving workflow:

  Ad Unit Placement
Function

Used to specify what types of ads serve and how users interact.

Used to report where (physical ad slot) or when (impression order) ads serve.
Usage Handles ad decisioning, including mediation group targeting and key-value targeting. Also handles user interactions including frequency capping and rewarded amounts. Functions as an optional reporting channel dimension, decoupled from ad units and mediation group targeting.
Implementation The Ad Unit ID is passed when requesting ads via the SDK. The Placement ID is passed via the SDK to specify where an ad is being shown, irrespective of the ad unit requesting the ad.

Placements are specific to each app and are created and managed in the AdMob user interface or AdMob API. When you create a placement name, a placement ID is generated that can be passed using the Google Mobile Ads SDK at ad load or show time.
