Pause banner ads for web (Alpha)

This feature is in Alpha

Alpha features are not available for every network and are subject to change. Eligible web publishers interested in testing this format can contact their account manager.

Example of how a pause ad works on mobile web.Pause banners are a new type of banner ad experience designed to enhance performance compared to standard inline banners while targeting ad blindness. This new format is an inline banner ad for the web that works by blurring the content located beneath the ad until a user takes action.

Pause banner ads provide an opportunity to increase revenue from banner inventory without disrupting the user experience.

How pause banner ads work

Pause banner ads integrate seamlessly into the web content flow. The following sequence outlines the user experience:

Example of the pause ads experience for a user, described in text on this page

Initial view:

The user is reading an article, and the inline banner ad starts to come into view.

Full view:

The inline banner ad is fully visible, and the text of the article continues below it.

Content pause:

Once the user continues scrolling, the article text below the banner blurs, and a "Continue reading" button pops up. At this point, the user cannot scroll down further.

Content unlocked:

When the user clicks the "Continue reading" button, the text of the article is unblurred. The button disappears, and the user is able to scroll down the page.

Eligibility and requirements

Pause banners are available for web publishers using standard inline banner traffic. Pause banner ads support all deal types and demand sources.

Publisher fit and environment support

  • This format is designed for publishers using web inventory who have regular inline banner ad slots and text-heavy content.
  • Supported environments include mobile web and desktop.

Implementation during the Alpha phase

Pause banners ads are currently in an Alpha testing phase.

  1. Specify the ad unit(s) where you'd like to test the format by inserting the following tag:

     window.googletag = window.googletag || { cmd: [] };
      googletag.cmd.push(function () {
        const slot = googletag.defineSlot(
          '/1/ad_unit', [300, 250], 'div').addService(googletag.pubads());
        slot.setConfig({contentPause: true});
        googletag.enableServices();
        googletag.display(slot);
      });

  2. The pause banner ad treatment will then be applied to the specified ad unit.
