Change SafeSearch settings

Go to SafeSearch settings

If you have a Google Account, you can manage SafeSearch for your personal account or browser.

  1. On your computer, go to your SafeSearch settings.
  2. Select Filter, Blur, or Off.

Tip: To manage your SafeSearch setting, at the top right of Google Search results, click your profile picture or initial.

Learn how SafeSearch works

On Google Search, Safesearch attempts to identify and filter inappropriate content.

  • Filter: Blocks all explicit results.
    • This is the default setting when Google’s systems indicate that you may be under 18.
  • Blur: Blurs explicit images. This is the default setting, if "Filter" doesn’t apply.
    • This setting helps blur explicit images, but explicit text and links can show if they're relevant for your search.
  • SafeSearch is Off: Shows all results, which may include explicit content.

You can’t change SafeSearch, if the setting is managed by someone else. For example:

  • Parents or schools can lock SafeSearch.
  • Some public Wi-Fi networks enforce SafeSearch.

Learn who can change SafeSearch

  • If you manage your own Google Account, you can change Safesearch settings.
  • If your parents manage your account in the Family Link app, they can change your SafeSearch setting.
  • If you’re at a school and are under 18 or are associated with a K-12 institution, the school can change it.
  • Administrators of your device or network can lock the SafeSearch in "Filter."

Manage SafeSearch settings for others

Change your child’s SafeSearch setting in the Family Link app
The SafeSearch is set to "Filter" by default for children who are signed in to an account managed with Family Link and those who are under 13, or the applicable age in your country or region. For these accounts, only parents can change the SafeSearch setting. Learn how to Manage Search on your child's Google Account.
Lock SafeSearch setting for devices & networks you manage
If you want to guarantee SafeSearch results on another device that you manage, like your PC or MacBook, you can map Google domains to forcesafesearch.google.com. Learn how to Lock SafeSearch for accounts, devices, and networks you manage.
