Canvas is an AI-powered collaboration tool in AI Mode that helps you work through plans, projects, and things you want to get done. Start co-creating with Canvas when you want to plan something like a trip, a move, a celebration, or even just a great weekend. You can also use Canvas to make a study guide or a quiz and help you with your learning goals.
With Canvas in AI Mode, you can:
- Easily get started with the tasks broken down for you.
- Customize and refine a plan by providing specific details or requesting modifications.
- Make smart decisions by getting specific recommendations tailored to your needs with a comparison table to help you consider the available options.
- Ask about text or items by highlighting or selecting options within the AI Mode response.
- Undo or redo actions to revert to a previous state in a response.
What you need
- Canvas is available on desktop. To access, opt-in to “AI Mode” experiment via Labs.
- You must be signed in to a personal Google Account that you manage on your own.
- For the best experience, enable Search history by turning on Web & App Activity.
Get started with Canvas
Important: AI responses may include mistakes. Learn about generative AI and its limitations.
- Go to google.com/ai on desktop.
- You can also go to google.com and click AI Mode
in the Search bar.
- You can also go to google.com and click AI Mode
- In the "Ask anything" bar at the bottom of your screen, enter a planning related prompt. For example:
- “Can you help plan a weekend getaway with 3 friends?”
- “Plan me a summer vacation with two kids in Disneyland"
- “Create budget friendly bathroom remodel plan for me”
- “Help me design a dream kitchen”
- “Help me make my home more energy efficient before the winter”
- “How can I plan a surprise birthday party for my partner?”
- “I’m moving out of my apartment in 6 weeks, help me with a plan and a timeline”
- For queries that indicate a planning intent, the "Create Canvas" banner will appear, allowing you to access the Canvas experience. If “Create Canvas” banner doesn't show up, try rephrasing your query to "Help me plan a XXX."
- Click Create Canvas.
- You'll find a new Canvas Thread being generated with Canvas on the right hand side of your screen.
- At the bottom of every AI Mode response, click Share
to share both the AI Mode response and Canvas.
- To send feedback, click Thumbs up
or Thumbs down
.
Make progress with Canvas
After reviewing Canvas content:
- You can ask a follow-up question or more details. For example:
- “Are there any other options that are within a one-hour driving distance?”
- Use AI Mode to customize Canvas. For example:
- “Add options for kid-friendly restaurants.”
- Use AI Mode to ask questions easily on Canvas. For example:
- Highlight text, select "Ask about this."
- Select places or product cards and ask questions.
- Highlight text, select "Ask about this."
Tip: To return to where you left off, click AI Mode history and then click the Canvas thread. Your previous AI Mode history and latest Canvas will be restored.
Manage your Canvas saved history
Important: Changes in Canvas are auto-saved. You can start where you left off anytime. You can undo and redo to move back and forth on Canvas versions.
- On your computer, go to AI Mode.
- On the left, click AI Mode history

- To view your AI Mode Canvas saved version, click the AI Mode history item.
- To undo or redo, at the top, click undo
or redo
.
Tip: Undoing and redoing will revert both the Canvas and AI Mode response thread. - To share your Canvas Thread, click the three-dot menu
next to your AIM canvas history and click Share
.
- To delete your Canvas thread, click the three-dot menu
next to your AIM canvas saved history and click Delete
.
Tip: You can update your saved version by typing a new prompt in the "Ask" text box at the bottom of your screen.
