When you search on Google, you’ll find Dictionary boxes. These boxes can help you learn about words. They show what words mean and can have:
- How to say the word
- Pictures
- What the word means in another language
- Other facts
Tip: If you search for "Define" or "What does it mean," you may get a result with a Dictionary box.
Where the Dictionary info comes from
Important: Dictionary boxes always tell you what a word means, but may not include the rest of the info above.
Definitions
Google doesn’t write or change the definitions. The definitions in the Dictionary boxes aren’t what Google thinks.
We get the definitions from licensed companies that compile dictionaries, like:
- Examples
- Words that mean the same thing (synonyms)
- Words that mean the opposite thing (antonyms)
- Where the word came from
Tip: The name of the definition provider is usually at the top of the Dictionary box.
How Google handles offensive definitionsSometimes, we show definitions for offensive words. Our partners tell us if these words are rude, mean, or offensive.
We only show an offensive definition if that's the main meaning of the word.
If a definition is really offensive, our partners can notify us of modification. We can take the definition away until they fix it.
It can take a little while for the new definition to show up.
Other content of Dictionary boxes
PicturesSome Dictionary boxes have pictures that don’t come from the dictionary companies. Google gets licensed pictures from other sources, and our system selects which ones to show.
Pronunciations
Some Dictionary boxes let you hear how to say a word. These pronunciations are:
- Made by Google or third-party providers.
- Different based on where you live.
- For example, the way you say a word in America can be different from how you say it in England.
Some Dictionary boxes tell you what a word means in another language. These translations come from Google Translate.
Report an issue with a Dictionary box
You can tell us if you find a mistake in a Dictionary box, like:
- A bad pronunciation
- A wrong definition
- A wrong picture
To submit a feedback:
- Go to google.com.
- Search for the definition of a word.
- At the bottom of the Dictionary box, click Feedback.
How your feedback helps
When you tell us about a definition, we:
- Can tell the third-party partner, who provides the definition, about the problem.
- Don’t tell them your individual feedback.
- Don’t share info that personally identifies you.
Your feedback on other things, like pictures or pronunciation, helps make Dictionary boxes better.
