The Waze Beacons program delivers seamless navigation to drivers underground where GPS signals don't reach. This technology provides reliable location services, increased driver safety, and better visibility into real-time events inside tunnels.

This article provides answers to common questions about Waze Beacons hardware, installation, ordering, and maintenance.

What is the recommended height of installation?

The recommended installation heights are:

Optimal installation height: 4–5 meters
Minimum installation height: 3 meters
Maximum installation height: 6 meters

Note:

The height should be consistent throughout the tunnel
Installation height may change depending on specific tunnel attributes

How long does the battery last?

Beacons feature a battery life of 4 to 6 years and come with a 4 year warranty from HID. Note that low temperatures may affect battery life.

How do I replace or charge the battery once it's empty?

Beacons are not rechargeable, and the batteries can't be replaced. A malfunctioning or dead beacon must be entirely replaced with a new one.

Does the user need to manually turn Bluetooth on?

Most Waze users have Bluetooth enabled on their device. If a driver has Bluetooth turned off and plans a route through a Beacons-equipped tunnel, Waze will automatically prompt them to enable Bluetooth at the start of the drive.

How much do beacons cost?

You can purchase beacons directly from the manufacturer, HID, at a volume discount available to Waze Beacons partners. Costs range from $900 to $1,000 per kilometer ($1,500 to $2,400 per mile).

Note that Waze does not sell beacons or take any part in the transaction.

Where do I order beacons from?

You can purchase beacons from HID. When it's time to place your order, Waze will connect you with HID representatives.

Can other navigation apps benefit from Waze Beacons?

Yes. The technology is open and free to use by other navigation services.

How do I know if a beacon is malfunctioning?

Waze actively monitors the status of each beacon within its system and provides ongoing updates regarding the beacons in your tunnel.

What materials should I use to mount beacons on the wall?

Please read the installation guidelines for more information on the adhesives required to mount beacons.

What information can Waze provide me about what's going on inside the tunnel?

Once beacons are installed and live inside the tunnel, Waze drivers receive real-time location tracking and the ability to report incidents like crashes, traffic, and hazards. These reports can be viewed live by anyone on the Waze Live Map. Integration with tunnel management systems is also possible.
