Important: Users who request a new Google Voice number cannot send or receive messages or calls until they complete identity verification.
This process prevents spam and abuse on the platform and assists in meeting regulatory standards.
Understand identity verification for Google Voice
To maintain Google Voice’s security and integrity, users must complete identity verification during sign-up. This step protects against fraudulent activity and ensures a safe experience for all users.
After you submit your information for verification, you'll either:
- Receive an instant decision.
- Receive a manual review that can take up to 3 business days.
Users whose requests are rejected may be eligible to resubmit and try again.
Verify your identity
As part of the Google Voice sign-up process, you get a prompt to verify your identity. To streamline the process, have a valid government-issued ID ready.
- On your device, open Google Voice.
- On the banner, click Verify now.
- When prompted, click Start verification. When asked, provide:
- Your Name: In the field, enter your legal name.
- A government-issued identification document:
- Select the document you want to use.
- Upload clear images of your document.
- Make sure all details are legible and match your sign-up information.
- Click Next.
- Your address:
- In the field, enter your address.
- Click Submit.
- When prompted, select the format you want to use for your address.
- Click Confirm.
- Wait for the verification result. Possible outcomes include:
- Instant pass
- Instant fail
- Manual review
- If manual review is needed, you typically get an update within 48–72 hours.
- Click Got it.

Google uses the information you provide to:
- Verify your identity.
- Protect against fraud and abuse.
- Improve our verification services for Google products and protect against fraud and abuse.
When applicable, the information you submit is treated in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy and the Google Payments Privacy Notice.
If we can't verify your identity
Sometimes we're unable to verify your identity from the documents you provide. We'll let you know if this happens and invite you to resubmit.
To prevent abuse, we only allow a limited number of verification attempts.
Tips on submitting your documents
- Use the same full name in all the documents.
- Submit documents that are current and not expired.
- Capture the entire document, including all four corners.
- Your image must be readable, in focus, and free of reflection and glare.
- Incomplete or obstructed documents or dark or blurry photos won’t be accepted.
- Uploading documents or photos other than what is requested might result in account suspension.
- If your document is two sided, capture the front and the back and upload both images.
- To prevent abuse, we allow only a limited number of verification attempts.
