Understanding How the Google Trends Explore Page uses Gemini models

Google Trends uses Gemini models, our most capable family of AI models, in an interactive side panel on the redesigned explore page, intended to help users more easily explore search trends, find inspiration, and dive deeper into relevant topics. This side panel shows and compares relevant search terms based on a user’s inputted text, and offers follow-up prompts designed to help find deeper insights and broader trends related to their original search.

Generative AI features on Google Trends are experimental. These features may display inaccurate information. Responses do not represent Google’s views. Don’t rely on these features as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.

How Search Term Suggestions Work

Using the enhanced Explore page experience with Gemini models is a simple process:

  1. Start Experience: Click on the “Suggest search terms” button to open the side panel
  2. Your Input: Enter your desired text into the search box titled “What’s your area of interest?” and press Enter.
  3. Output: Based on your query, Gemini capabilities in Google Trends will generate and compare trends for a list of up to eight suggested search terms. In some cases you may see: “I'm sorry, I can't help with that.” in which case you may need to try a different request or try searching later. The side panel will also display related ideas to explore further. A short explanation of the request is shown above the search terms.
  4. Trend results: The results display trends timelines for each search term, as well as the top and rising queries in the “Commonly searched queries” tables.

Example: You search for "dog breeds”. The feature might return relevant terms like “Bulldog”, “Poodle”, “Labrador Retriever”, etc… It might also offer ideas to explore further such as “Hypoallergenic dog breeds”, “Dog training tips”, etc…
