Visual tagging uses Tag Assistant to provide guided instructions to configure tags directly on your website. This streamlines your conversion tracking.
Before you begin
Here's what you'll need before you can set up conversion tracking for transaction-specific values on your website:
- Sign up for a Google Ads account at https://ads.google.com.
- You must have at least one conversion action to track transaction-specific values. If you haven't done so yet, follow the instructions to Create a conversion action and Set up your Google tag.
- You will need an order confirmation page, a sitewide Google tag , and edit access to the container.
- You should have an authorized credit card to place a test order.
Instructions
- To check your purchase conversions setup, click the Troubleshoot button in Conversions Summary.
- Choose a troubleshooting method and select “Fix conversions with a guided flow” to
- To set up conversion measurement, click “Go to your website” where you’ll be guided to follow the instructions in your browser’s side panel.
- Review directions and click Get started.
Step 1 of 3: Place a test order
Placing a test order on your website will allow you to locate the right information to track your purchase values.
On your website, choose the test product or service and add it to the cart. Once all test products and services have been added to your cart, proceed with the checkout process and place the test order. Upon completing the test order, you should receive an order confirmation page.
In the side panel, click I’m done. Visual tagging will scan your order confirmation page for a Google Tag Manager container and provide you with an update regarding your tags as detailed in the table below.
If visual tagging locates your Google Tag Manager containers, choose the one you plan to use for your purchase conversions.
Step 2 of 3: Add order information
- Select the website element for each value you want to include with your purchase conversions by clicking the
icon to either “Edit value” or “Ignore value”.
- Transaction ID
- Order Subtotal
- Currency
- Customer name
- Customer email
- Customer phone
- Once you’ve updated all values, click Confirm.
Step 3 of 3: Publish changes
Publish your changes in Google Tag Manager to start measuring purchase conversions.

Notifications and error states
