Install and migrate your tags with the Google & YouTube app

If you’ve already set up your measurement with Shopify, you need to install the Google & YouTube app before you reimplement your Google tags. Learn more about migrating to the Google & YouTube app on Shopify.

Skip connecting your account and manually add your Google tags

When you connect a Google service (Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center, Floodlight) to the Google & YouTube app in Shopify, the app will load the corresponding Google tags. The Google tag setting in the Google & YouTube app will show you Google tags already loaded on your website by the product-accounts they’ve connected to the app, as well as an option to manually add additional Google tags by entering the corresponding tag IDs . If you don’t want to connect the account you can add tags manually by following these instructions in each of the sections below.

Install the Google & YouTube app in your Shopify account for the first time

Just want to set up Google Ads conversion measurement?

Step 1 of 5: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.
  4. Review the list of permissions required, then click Install to continue.
  5. If the app isn't connected to Google, click Connect Google account and choose the Google account that owns your Ads property.

Step 2 of 5: Connect your Google Ads account (Recommended)

  1. In the “Just want to set up Google Ads conversion measurement?" section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your conversion measurement by choosing to:
  • Connect your Google Ads account from the “Your Google Account section”. Select your Google Ads account, and click Connect. Move on to the next step.
  • OR if you would like to skip connecting to your Ads account now, Select “Skip account connection”. Move on to the next step

Step 3 of 5: Set up conversion measurement

If you connected a Google Ads account:

  1. Under “Measure conversions”, you’ll find a list of Shopify events and destinations. When you link your Google Ads account, purchase, add to cart, checkout started conversion actions are the suggested default in Google Ads, and set as the account default. Shopify will map that to a Shopify event. Click confirm if you don’t want to update any of the events and destinations. Learn more about the Google & YouTube app event parameters.

  2. If you want to edit your conversion events and destinations, click Manage.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to the conversion action you’d like to change. You can select to:
    • Create a new action in the linked account
    • Select from linked account (if you have conversion actions set up in your Google Ads account)
    • Don’t measure in linked account
  4. You can also add custom Google Ads conversion or Floodlight destinations to receive data from the specified Shopify events
    • For Google Ads, enter the AW-CONVERSION_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL string found in your event snippet
  5. Click Save for each Shopify event you want to manage.
  6. When you are done updating the Shopify events, click Save.
  7. Review your Shopify events and Google Ads destinations, click Confirm.
  8. Confirm your enhanced conversions settings by clicking, Confirm. Note: You may not need to complete this step depending on your account setup.

If you skipped connecting a Google Ads account:

You can skip connecting a Google Ads account for the following reasons.

  • If you have more than one account to link. The Google & YouTube app only works for a single CID and is unable to set up tagging across a MCC or multiple CIDs using a single Shopify account.
  • You don’t see your destination showing up in the list of accounts to link because you don’t have admin access
  • Your account type is not supported by the Google & YouTube app, like Floodlight.
  1. If you want to skip account connection, click Yes, skip.
  2. Add custom Google Ads conversion (or Floodlight) destinations to receive data from the specified Shopify events
    • For Ads, enter the AW-CONVERSION_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL string found in your event snippet
    • For Floodlight, enter the DC-CONFIG_ID/ACTIVITY_GROUP_TAG_STRING/ACTIVITY_TAG_STRING+COUNTING_METHOD string found in your Google tag event snippet for tagging.
  3. Click Save for each Shopify event you want to manage.
  4. When you are done updating the Shopify events, click Save.
  5. Review your Shopify events and Google Ads destinations, click Confirm.

Step 4 of 5: Confirm Google tags

  1. Google tags are installed for each relevant service you connect to the Google & YouTube app. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  2. Click Add Google tag to manually add Google tags without connecting the associated account or property. You can connect your services on the Overview page.
  3. When you are done, click Save.
  4. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  5. Click Complete setup.

If you don’t complete all these steps you won’t be able to access your settings to make updates.

You can review your settings and tags by navigating to the “Settings” page.

  1. Navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Conversion event settings” section or the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manage your conversion event settings or manually add Google tags.
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.

Step 5 of 5: Verify your new conversion actions

Check that your new campaigns are bidding to the new conversion action and set it up as a primary conversion.

Just want to set up Google Analytics?

Step 1 of 3: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.

Step 2 of 3: Connect your Google Analytics web stream (Recommended)

  1. In the Overview page in the “Just want to set up Google Analytics 4"  section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your Analytics measurement by choosing to:
    1. Connect your Google Analytics property from the “Your Google Account section”. 
    2. Select your Google Analytics property, and click Connect. Click Confirm.

Step 3 of 3: Add your Google tag for Analytics manually  (Alternative)

  1. In the Google & YouTube app, navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manually add Google tags for additional Google Analytics properties (or other Google services).
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.

Connect your Merchant Center account

Step 1 of 3: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.

Step 2 of 3: Connect your Merchant Center account (Recommended)

  1. Connect your Google Merchant Center account. The Merchant Center IDs listed are the IDs associated with your Google account where your Google account is an administrator.
  2. Check your online store requirements:
    • Add a valid payment method
    • Create an online store
    • Add a refund policy and terms of service
    • Confirm that you’ve added contact information to your online store
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Review Store settings for:
    • Product Sync
    • Shipping Sync
    • Countries and languages
    • Conversion measurement
    • Checkout link
  5. Click Confirm.
  6. Agree to the terms and conditions.
  7. Click Complete setup.

After you complete setup, products that are available to your online store automatically sync with Google. For eligible stores, products synced to Google Merchant Center using the Google & YouTube app can display on relevant Google surfaces for free. To ensure your measurement doesn’t break while continuing to use third-party product sync, turn off the Google & YouTube app product sync while onboarding to the app. Learn more about Syncing your products

Step 3 of 3: Add your Google tag for Merchant Center manually (Alternative)

You can skip connecting a Merchant Center account and manually add your Google tag:

  1. In the Google & YouTube app, navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manually add Google tags.
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.

Connect relevant services:

From the Overview page, you can view your product listing status and connect relevant services like Google Ads and Google Analytics:

  • Product listings: All of the products that are synced to the Google Merchant Center. Your approved products might be eligible to display for free across different Google surfaces such as the Shopping page, Google Search, Google Images, Google Maps, and Google Lens.
  • Connecting to relevant services: Under “Impactful Opportunities,” click, Get started for Google Ads and Google Analytics

Setting up Floodlight

Step 1 of 3: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.

Step 2 of 3: Set up conversion measurement

  1. In the Google & YouTube app, navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Conversion event settings” section or the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manage your conversion event settings or manually add Google tags.
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.
  6. Add custom Floodlight conversion destinations to receive data from the specified Shopify events
    • DC-CONFIG_ID/ACTIVITY_GROUP_TAG_STRING/ACTIVITY_TAG_STRING+COUNTING_METHOD string found in your Google tag event snippet for tagging.
  7. Click Save for each Shopify event you want to manage.
  8. When you are done updating the Shopify events, click Save.
  9. Review your Shopify events and Floodlight destinations, click Confirm.

Step 3 of 3: Confirm Google tags

  1. Google tags are installed for each relevant service you connect to the Google & YouTube app. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm
  2. Click Add Google tag to manually add Google tags.
  3. When you are done, click Save.
  4. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  5. Click Complete setup.

If you have installed the app already, migrate and manage your tags from settings

If you’ve already installed the Google & YouTube app, you can connect additional services, manage your settings, and add additional Google tags.

Step 1: Connect a Google account

  1. In the Google & YouTube app, navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the Settings page, select what connected Google product or account you want to make changes to migrate or manage your tags from (Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center, or Floodlight)
  3. Click Get started.
    1. OR If you don’t see an account connected, navigate to the Overview page. In the “Impactful opportunities section”, to connect any relevant account. Click Get started.

Google Ads

Step 2: Connect your Google Ads account (Recommended)

  1. In the “Just want to set up Google Ads conversion measurement?" section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your conversion measurement by choosing to:
    • Connect your Google Ads account from the “Your Google Account section”. Select your Google Ads account, and click Connect. Move on to the next step.
    • OR if you would like to skip connecting to your Ads account now, Select “Skip account connection”. Move on to the next step.

Step 3: Set up conversion measurement

If you connected a Google Ads account:

  1. Under “Measure conversions”, you’ll find a list of Shopify events and destinations. When you link your Google Ads account, purchase, add to cart, checkout started conversion actions are the suggested default in Google Ads, and set as the account default.   1. Google tags are installed for each relevant service you connect to the Google & YouTube app. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  2. Click Add Google tag to manually add Google tags without connecting the associated account or property. You can connect your services on the Overview page.
  3. When you are done, click Save.
  4. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  5. Click Complete setup.

Follow the instructions above based on which product or account you’ve connected.

Verify your new conversion actions

When you link your Google Ads account to your Google & YouTube app on Shopify, a purchase conversion action is created automatically in Google Ads, and set as the account default. Additionally, the conversion actions below will also be created in Google Ads but set as secondary conversion actions, which are included for observation only and don't affect bidding. Check that your new campaigns are bidding to the new conversion action and set it up as a primary conversion:

Google Analytics

Step 2: Connect your Google Analytics web stream (Recommended)

  1. In the Overview page in the “Just want to set up Google Analytics 4" section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your Analytics measurement by choosing to:
    • Connect your Google Analytics property from the “Your Google Account section”.
    • Select your Google Analytics property, and click Connect. Click Confirm.

Merchant Center
