IP Protection

Chrome has plans to introduce IP Protection in Incognito mode to enhance user privacy. This feature aims to improve user privacy by protecting users’ IP addresses in Incognito mode, while also minimizing disruption to essential web functions like anti-fraud and anti-spam measures. IP geolocation use cases are also preserved with this proposal. IP Protection will mask users’ IP addresses when accessing certain third-party content, making it harder for third parties to track users across the web. The proposal uses a list-based approach, called the Masked Domain List (MDL), to determine which domains will receive a masked IP address when certain conditions are met..

The IP Protection proposal was announced in July 2024. The feature is expected to launch no sooner than May 2025, and will be available in Chrome's Incognito mode on Android and Desktop platforms. IP Protection will initially be available in certain regions, with plans to expand availability over time.
