Frequently asked questions about the Topics API

Q: If my domain is classified as "News" by the Topics API, does that mean my inventory is more likely to be impacted by buyside filters that avoid the new category?

A: The classification of your site alone does not predict the Topics that will be surfaced for users on your site. Your users visit many other websites as they browse the internet, so it's likely that the Topics associated with users on your site include Topics other than "News." In this case, Topics can provide inventory for sites classified as "News" with diverse signals that may make their inventory more valuable to buyers that typically avoid news sites.

Q. Are there any plans to make Topics more explicitly useful to single-domain entities? Perhaps with more Topics per-domain?

Sites benefit from the topics picked up by their users on other sites. So a golf-specific site might only be classified as golf but their users could have any of the topics in the taxonomy based on their individual browsing history. There isn’t a limit on the number of topics that can be assigned to a site, but on average it’s one to two.

Q. Is there anything that a publisher can do with their Topics data to help monetize their audience directly

While publishers can see which topics are assigned to their site using the classifier tool (chrome://topics-internals), the real value of the Topics API lies in how it enhances programmatic advertising. By providing signals about user interests, Topics helps advertisers better target their campaigns, leading to more relevant ads for publishers.
