Fix touch & response issues on your Pixel screen

If your Pixel touchscreen has sensitivity issues, doesn’t respond, or doesn’t rotate, try these fixes.

For other screen issues, like flickering light, cracks, or a line on the screen, learn how to fix screen appearance issues on your Pixel phone.

Fix touchscreen response issues

If your screen doesn't respond to touches or has sensitivity issues, try the steps below for your Pixel phone model.

Important: If the touch issue only happens in a specific app, contact the app developer.

Check your phone's screen:

  1. Try removing the case or screen protector to see if touch responsiveness improves. You may not be able to put the screen protector on again.
  2. If you're wearing gloves, take them off.
  3. If you've put any stickers over the screen or sensors, peel them off.
  4. Make sure that your screen is clean.
Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro & Pixel 9 Pro XL
Open your phone's Settings app, then:
  1. Run Touch diagnostics test:
    • Tap Display & touch and then Touch diagnostics.

If this doesn't work:

  1. Check for a system update.
    1. Tap System and then Software updates.
    2. Install any updates.
  2. If the issue is with gesture navigation, try to adjust the device settings.
    1. Tap System and then Navigation mode and then Gesture navigation.
    2. To adjust the sensitivity, tap Settings .
  3. Check if Adaptive touch helps:
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. Tap Display & touch and then Touch sensitivity.
    3. Turn Adaptive touch on or off.
Learn what information is shared with Google

If you share device and touch screen diagnostics information and related settings, your phone can send info like:

  • Account info
  • Your phone’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number
  • Model name (such as Pixel 9 or Pixel 9 Pro)
  • Session ID number
  • Settings details like Adaptive Touch mode and Screen Protector mode
  • Touchscreen hardware signals
Pixel 8a & earlier, including Fold

Check if Screen protector mode helps:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Display & touch and then Touch sensitivity.
  3. Turn Screen protector mode on or off.

Fix screen rotation

If your screen doesn't rotate:

  1. Check if auto-rotate is on:
    1. From the top of the screen, swipe down to open the Settings app.
    2. Tap Display & Touch and then Auto-rotate screen.
  2. Check for a system update.
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. Tap System and then Software updates.
    3. Install any updates.
  3. Find out whether an app causes your problem
    1. Turn on safe mode. Learn how to turn on safe mode.
    2. Once you're in safe mode, check if screen rotation works.
      • If your screen works in safe mode, a downloaded app is most likely causing your issue.
        1. To exit safe mode, restart your phone.
        2. To find the app that’s causing issues, uninstall recently downloaded apps one by one.
        3. Once you remove the app that's causing the problem, you can reinstall the other apps that you removed.
      • If your screen doesn't work in safe mode, continue to the next step.

Tip: Airplane mode is automatically turned on when you enter safe mode. We recommend turning airplane mode off in order to continue using features such as GPS, Wi-Fi, and making phone calls.

  1. Check for app updates.
    • If the issue is with a specific app, check for updates in the app store.

Fix phone screen that stays on during phone calls

If your screen stays on or off after you move your phone away from your face during phone calls or when using certain apps, open your phone’s Settings app and then:

  1. Check for a system update.
    1. Tap System and then Software updates.
    2. Install any updates.
  2. Check display timeout settings and disable the Screen attention setting.
    1. Tap Display and then Screen timeout.
    2. Turn off Screen attention.
Understand the white dot at the top of the screen (Pixel 5)

Under your Pixel 5 phone’s screen, at the top center, you can see a white dot. This white dot is your proximity sensor. When your proximity sensor is on, the dot shows through the display. The dot can blink or stay solid.

Your proximity sensor keeps your phone’s screen off while you hold your phone near your face during a call, when your screen is locked, and when used by certain apps. Keeping the screen off helps save battery and avoid accidental taps on the screen.

All Pixel phones have proximity sensors. Because the Pixel 5’s display goes almost to the edge, you can see the Pixel 5’s sensor under the screen. Check our Pixel 5 phone diagram.
