You can use Gboard writing tools to improve your text with ease. With writing tools, you can use features like:

• Predefined rewriting styles:
  • Suggested: Provides draft suggestions tailored to your personal style. These suggestions are based on analysis of your current conversation, text input, and typing patterns.
    • This feature is available when personalized suggestions are on.
  • Proofread: Check and correct your texts for grammatical or spelling mistakes.
  • Rephrase: Offers alternative phrasing for clearer or more appropriate communication.
  • Professional: Adjusts tone for formal communication.
  • Friendly: Changes tone to be more casual and approachable.
  • Emojify: Adds emojis to messages for expressiveness.
  • Elaborate: Expands text with more details.
  • Shorten: Condenses text for conciseness.
• Custom prompt: Enter your own prompt to improve your text.
• Smart reply: Provides quick response options based on your screen context.
  • This feature is available when personalized suggestions are on.

• Set Gboard as default keyboard.

Get the most out of writing tools with personalized suggestions

To get the best writing help, turn on personalized suggestions. Compare how your writing experience changes with this setting. This requires an internet connection to process requests through secure cloud servers with Private AI Compute.

• When personalized suggestions are on:
  • Full personalization: Writing tools use the current screen context and your unique writing style to tailor your suggestions.
  • Predefined styles: You get access to all predefined rewriting styles, including the “Suggested” tab. The “Suggested” tab uses both the current screen context and your writing style. Other predefined styles only use screen context.
  • Smart replies: You get smart reply suggestions. These suggested replies are based on the current screen context and your unique writing style.
  • Custom prompts: You can use custom prompts to generate and refine text. All drafted results use the current screen context and your writing style.
• When personalized suggestions are off:
  • No “Suggested” tab and smart replies: The “Suggested” tab and smart replies are unavailable.
  • Non-personalized custom prompts and predefined styles: You can still use predefined styles or custom prompts. However, writing tools won’t personalize these drafts to your style or screen context.

Set up personalized suggestions

Important:

• Personalized suggestions are only available in Pixel 11 series devices.
• With your permission, when "Personalized suggestions" is enabled, Gboard can use your typing history, as well as screen context taken at the time of use from supported first and third-party messaging apps, to provide relevant suggestions. Learn how writing tools keep your information private.

Personalized suggestions are available in supported messaging apps such as Google Messages (except in unfolded mode on foldable devices), Google Chat, LINE, and other chat apps.

To set up personalized suggestions:

1. Open a messaging app or other text field with Gboard.
2. On your keyboard suggestion bar, tap Writing tools .
   • Or, you can tap Menu Writing tools .
3. You’ll be presented with a “Improve writing suggestions with personal context" screen, review the details. Learn how writing tools keep your information private.
4. To enable personalized suggestions by letting writing tools use your on-screen content and typing history in the current conversation in supported messaging apps, tap OK.
   • If you tap “No thanks”, features like smart reply suggestions and the “Suggested” tab will be unavailable. You can always turn on “Personalized suggestions” later in settings.

To turn the "Personalized suggestions" feature on or off any time in writing tools settings:

1. Tap the Writing tools Menu .
2. Toggle Personalized suggestions on or off.

Use writing tools with personalized suggestions

With personalized suggestions, you can:

• Use the “Suggested” tab: Get personalized writing suggestions based on the current conversation context and your simple draft.
• Respond with smart reply suggestions: Choose quick suggestions based on your screen context and personal style without having to type.
• Use open prompt to generate or rewrite personalized text.

Refine your text using the “Suggested” tab, predefined styles, or custom prompts

Important: The “Suggested” tab is only available when “Personalized suggestions” is on.

When you open writing tools with a draft in a supported messaging app, it uses the current screen context to generate a tailored rewrite in your writing style in this conversation in the “Suggested” tab. You can also select other predefined styles or enter custom prompts to rewrite your text.

1. Open a messaging app or other text field with Gboard.
2. Write a brief text on what you want to say.
3. On your keyboard suggestion bar, tap Writing tools .
   • Or, you can tap Menu Writing tools .
4. The “Suggested” tab appears automatically to provide draft suggestions in the supported apps tailored to your personal style. These suggestions are based on analysis of your current conversation, text input, and your typing patterns.
   • For example: If you type “7 PM Spanish restaurant?” in a messaging app text field, the “Suggested” tab may rewrite it to “That sounds like a great plan! How about dinner on Thursday at 7 PM at the Spanish restaurant?”.
5. In the “Suggested” tab, review the drafted message.
6. Select how to proceed:
   • If the drafted message looks good to you, tap Use this.
   • You can also use other suggestion type or style:
     • For grammar and spelling correction: Tap Proofread .
     • For alternative phrasing: Tap Rephrase .
     • For business-like tone: Tap Professional .
     • For warm and informal tone: Tap Friendly .
     • For adding emojis: Tap Emojify .
     • For adding more details: Tap Elaborate .
     • For a more concise texts: Tap Shorten .
7. To rewrite or refine the text with your own custom prompt, tap Describe your edit.
8. Enter a custom prompt to modify the messages. You can enter multiple prompts to refine your draft. Learn how to write with custom prompts.
   • For example: “Make it slightly more casual” or “Make it more friendly and convincing”.

Generate text using smart reply suggestions or custom prompts

Important: Smart reply is only available when “Personalized suggestions” is on.

Respond quickly with smart replies. When you open writing tools in an empty text field in a supported messaging app, writing tools use the current screen context to suggest replies before you type.

Under the draft, writing tools display smart reply options like “Accept invite” or “Decline politely”. You can choose these options to generate a draft based on the selected option.

Alternatively, you can write your own instructions in the custom prompt field to generate a personalized message.

1. Open a conversation in a supported messaging app.
2. Select a conversation.
   • For example: You received a message asking if you want to join a hiking trip next weekend. You want to politely decline.
3. With an empty text field, tap the Writing tools .
   • Or, you can tap Menu Writing tools .
4. Choose your option:
   • Using smart reply suggestions:
     1. Check the suggested smart reply options displayed, which writing tools dynamically generate from your active chat.
        • For example: If a friend invites you to a hiking trip next weekend, writing tools may display the options: “Accept invite”, “Decline politely”, and “Reply maybe”.
     2. Tap one of the suggested smart reply options to generate a draft in your personal voice.
        • For example: If you choose “Decline politely”, the suggestion might be something like “Thank you for the invitation to the hiking trip this weekend! I can’t attend due to a conflict. I hope you all have an amazing time!”.
   • Alternatively, you can type free-form instructions in your own words to customize your message or generate a personalized text:
     1. In the “What do you want to write?” text field in writing tools, enter your prompt.
        • For example: “Polite no with excuse”
     2. Tap on arrow icon .
     3. Review the drafted message based on your prompt.
        • For example: “Thanks so much for the invite! That sounds really fun, but I actually already have plans this weekend. Hope you have a great time!”
5. If the drafted message looks good to you, tap Use this.
   • To rewrite or refine your message further, enter your instructions in the field “How should this text change?”. Learn how to rewrite text with custom prompts.

Use writing tools without personalized suggestions

If you turn off personalized suggestions, you can still rewrite and improve your text using predefined styles and custom prompt, or generate new text using custom prompt. However, writing tools won’t personalize these suggestions based on your writing style and screen context. The “Suggested” tab and smart reply suggestions are also unavailable.

1. On your Android device, install Gboard.
2. Open any app where you can enter text, like Android Messages, Gmail, or Keep.
   • To rewrite or style text, write your text in the input field first.
3. Select Writing tools .
   • Alternatively, you can access the writing tools from the Menu .
4. Rewrite text using predefined styles:
   • For grammar and spelling correction: Tap Proofread .
   • For alternative phrasing: Tap Rephrase .
   • For business-like tone: Tap Professional .
   • For warm and informal tone: Tap Friendly .
   • For adding emojis: Tap Emojify .
   • For adding more details: Tap Elaborate .
   • For a more concise texts: Tap Shorten .
5. Tap Use this.
6. To revert back to the original text, tap Undo .

Write with custom prompts

You can write your own instructions to rewrite existing text in the text box or generate new messages from scratch.

Tip: If you turn on personalized suggestions, writing tools personalize your custom prompt drafts. When screen context and typing history is available, the drafted results will match your unique writing style and current screen context. You can still use custom prompts without screen context or typing history but the results will be more generic.

Rewrite text with custom prompts

If you already wrote a message, you can use custom prompts to polish your draft.

1. Open a messaging app or other text field with Gboard.
2. Write a brief draft on what you want to say.
3. On your keyboard suggestion bar, tap Writing tools .
   • Or, you can tap Menu Writing tools .
4. To rewrite or refine the text with your own custom prompt, tap Describe your edit.
5. Enter your instructions, such as "Make this sound more enthusiastic".
6. Review the suggestion.
7. If the drafted message looks good to you, tap Use this.

Generate text with custom prompts

If your text field is empty, you can instruct writing tools to generate a new message.

1. Open a messaging app or other text field with Gboard.
2. With an empty text field, on your keyboard suggestion bar, tap Writing tools .
   • Or, you can tap Menu Writing tools .
3. To generate a draft with your own custom prompt, tap What do you want to write?
4. Enter your instructions, such as "Write a polite decline to a dinner invitation".
5. If the drafted message looks good to you, tap Use this.

Refine your suggestions

Once a draft is generated, you can refine it further:

• Enter more prompts:
  1. To modify your message multiple times, in the prompt field, tap How should this text change?.
  2. Write new instructions.
     • For example: “make it sound more humorous”, “tidy it up and add some emojis”, or “translate this to Spanish”.
• Edit your draft: To make changes to the suggestion directly, on the suggestion card, tap Edit .
• Regenerate the suggestion: To get a new suggestion based on the same prompt, tap Regenerate .
• View previous draft versions: To view previous drafts, on the suggestion card, swipe left or right.

Things you need to know about writing tools

• While the suggestion loads, you should be able to select all the other rewrite styles.
  • When you select another style, it should start to load the suggestion for the new style.
• If the original message or the selected text is too long, writing tools automatically selects a shorter segment. You can adjust the selection.
• If you turn on “Personalized suggestions,” writing tools use your current screen context and writing style in the current conversation to generate suggestions. Over time, the tool adapts to your writing style.
