Create a UPI number on Google Pay

UPI Number

A UPI Number is a bank-verified phone number identifier of your UPI ID. It allows you to receive money from users, regardless of the app they use. You can create up to 3 UPI numbers for a UPI ID. This can be your phone number or any 8–9 digit numeric ID you choose.

This is an extension of the Google Pay through phone number option that you find on your UPI app. This will allow anyone to send money from any UPI app.

Tip: By May 2022, you can't receive payments through your phone number unless you set your phone number as a UPI Number. However, you can continue to receive payments through your UPI ID or chathead.

  • Your UPI number can’t be in serial ascending or descending order (for example, 123456789).

FAQ

I tried to delete my UPI Number, but there’s an error

Check your Google Pay account for any pending actions. For example, if you have any pending mandates, you’ll need to take action on them before you can delete your UPI Number.

I chose account XX as my primary bank, but money went to YY

If you receive payments through a UPI number or UPI ID, the money goes into the bank account associated with that UPI ID or number.

However, if both the sender and recipient are on Google Pay, the transferred funds are received in the bank account associated with the default bank account on Google Pay.

I tried to create a UPI Number, but the status isn’t updated

You can continue to receive phone number payments from the Google Pay app. We’ll notify you when the status is updated. To check the status, go to the payment method settings.

You can also use a UPI ID to transfer money for the current transaction and try again later.

I can’t send money to a person through their phone number

As per the NPCI guidelines, to receive payments through a phone number on UPI, the receiver needs to map their phone number with a UPI ID. This applies to all UPI platforms.

If your receiver’s phone number isn’t mapped with UPI ID, the payment may fail.

Fix payment issues

To fix payment issues, invite the receiver to map their phone number with a UPI ID. You can try a different payment method like QR code or UPI ID. If the payment fails on Google Pay, you’ll get a prompt with the same information on the app.

Tip: To have them link their number to UPI, you can send them a message through WhatsApp.

The UPI number creation is still pending

Your UPI number creation depends on the readiness of the payment service provider you're using. You'll receive a notification when your UPI number is created. To check the status, go to the "Manage UPI IDs" section.

I received multiple notifications to create a UPI number

You might continue to receive notifications to create a UPI number in multiple places within the app. This is because the use of a UPI number becomes critical after phone number payments stop in May 2022.

I couldn't pay to a UPI number registered phone number

The payment service provider used by the recipient might not be ready with the UPI number feature. Try to make the payment through your recipient’s UPI ID instead.

I haven't received an OTP to my bank registered number when creating a UPI number

If you didn’t receive an OTP when you sign up for Google Pay:

  • Check if you can send and receive messages on your phone.
  • Check if you're using your default messaging app.
Tip: If you’re using third-party apps like TrueCaller or Messenger, temporarily disable them to receive the OTP.
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of Google Pay .
To check if an update is available:
    1. On the Play store or App store, search: Google Pay
    2. If an update is available, you'll find an "Update" option.
    3. Tap Update.
