I just need to take a few details from you which will help me to help you. Did you download the Google Messages application from the Play Store or was it pre installed on your handset? Have you deleted the cache for the Google Messages application and seen if that helps?
Another thing is are you using the Google Messages beta version and have you left it and come back to the stable version with the same issues.*
*If the above paragraph makes no sense to you then you're probably on the stable version don't worry.
