Update a sent message

You can edit a Rich Communication Services (RCS), SMS, or MMS message after you send it. This feature also works on:

• One-on-one conversation with iPhone users who also have RCS chats turned on
• Group RCS chats even if other participants don't have editing capabilities

Editing is enabled in the app only, not on the web UI.

The ability to edit a sent message expires after 15 minutes, regardless whether the recipient has read the message or responded to it.

When you edit a message:

• An "Edited" label appears above the message in the conversation for both the sender and recipient.
• On SMS, the recipient receives another message that starts with "*".

Edit a sent message

1. On your device, open Google Messages .
2. Touch and hold a sent message in a conversation.
3. At the top of the screen, tap Edit .
   • If you touch and hold a message after 15 minutes, the Edit won’t be available.
4. Edit the message.
5. To update the sent message, tap Check .
   • To exit the editing view, next to “Edit message,” tap Exit .

If a recipient doesn't support the edit feature, they’ll receive a new message marked with a "*".
