About Regional Promotions using location as the audience type

Regional Promotions use location as the audience type to help you tailor your promotions to shoppers in specific geographic regions. Your promotions will be shown on free listings to users within the regions you set up.

Note: Regional Promotions using location as the audience type is available to US merchants only.

Promotion types supported

There are no specific restrictions on promotion types. For example, you can use options such as percent (%) off, Amount off for your location-specific targeting. However, the promotion must be valid within the selected regions.

Note:

  • Location based promotions targeting is currently supported only for online free listings.
  • You must have regions set up in your Merchant Center account to use this feature. Regions can be configured via the Merchant Center UI, or the Content API.

How to submit Regional Promotions

You can submit Regional Promotions via the promotion data source or, the promotion builder tool.

Option 1: Create a promotion data source

  1. In your Merchant Center account, under “Marketing”, select Promotions in the left navigation menu.
  2. Select the Add promotion dropdown.
  3. Select Add promotion source.
  4. On the “Add promotions” page, select your input method. There are 3 input methods to choose from:
    • Google Sheets
    • Scheduled fetch
    • Upload
  5. You can use either an XML file, tab-delimited file, or Google Spreadsheet to upload a new promotions data source.
  6. Add the additional attribute audience [audience].
    • Add “location” as the value. The value specifies that the promotion is a regional promotion.
  7. Set the Region ID inclusion [region_id_inclusion] attribute.
    • Add the “region ID” of the region as the value. The value specifies that the promotion will only be visible to users in these regions.
    • The Region IDs must match the region IDs configured in your Merchant Center account.
  8. Add online as the supported value to the Eligible channel for promotion [redemption_channel] attribute.
  9. Add Free_listings as the supported value to the Promotion destination [promotion_destination] attribute.
  10. Select Continue to upload your promotions data source according to your selected method.

Option 2: Create using the promotion builder tool

Create a new promotion and update the promotion rules or settings to follow our policy and SKU requirements. To define your promotion type, value, and products, follow the steps below:

  1. In your Merchant Center account, under “Marketing”, select Promotions from the left navigation menu.
  2. On the “Promotions” page, select Add promotion dropdown.
  3. Select Create promotion.
  4. On the “New promotion” page, and in the "Audiences" section, select Show to a preferred audience.
  5. Select Add an audience.
  6. In the “Add an audience type” section, select Location to search the region names and add Region ID when a list of your configured regions appear.
  7. Select the region(s) where this promotion should be active. You can select multiple regions.
    • If you don't have any regions configured, you'll be prompted to set them up. Learn more about creating regions.
  8. Select Save.
  9. Complete the promotion setup and then, select Next.
Note: This feature is only available for online free listings and is not yet supported for in-store local free listings.
