You can choose to let Gmail, Chat and Meet use your content and activity in these products to provide smart features and personalise your experience. When you turn on smart features for Gmail, Chat and Meet, you get experiences like:
- Automatic email filters and categories
- High priority notifications for emails
- Summary cards above emails
- Smart Compose in Gmail
- Smart Compose in Chat
- Smart Reply in Gmail
- Nudges about important emails

Smart feature settings govern the degree of personalisation that you want. You can always turn smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet on or off in your settings. When smart features are on, your data may be used to improve these features.
When you turn on smart features, you can do things like:
- Sort and filter emails into inbox categories in Gmail.
- Get predictive writing suggestions when you compose a message in Chat.
- Track an upcoming order using summary cards in Gmail.
When you turn off smart features, you can't use the experiences like those listed above in Gmail, Chat and Meet until you turn them on again. However, some smart features with individual on or off settings are still available. These features don't use opted-out user data to improve the models that power them. Some examples include:
If you use Google Workspace and other Google products like Maps or Wallet, changes to Gmail, Chat and Meet smart feature settings don't affect your existing control over smart feature settings in those products.
Change smart feature settings for Gmail, Chat and Meet
Important:
- By default, smart features are turned off if you're in:
- The European Economic Area
- Japan
- Switzerland
- The United Kingdom
- Changes to smart feature settings apply across all devices and apps where you're signed in.
- If you're on the mobile Gmail app but don't get a notification about the changes, update your app.
- Some changes made on your computer aren't reflected in the mobile app.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app
