When you open an email thread, an AI Overview appears and summarizes all key points and any replies in the thread.
What you need
You can get an AI Overview of an email thread with:
- An eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan: Available in multiple supported languages globally.
- A personal Google Account: Available in supported languages, but restricted to the US only. Learn about supported languages for Google Workspace with Gemini.
Learn how an AI Overview summarizes your email thread
- You can expand or minimize an AI Overview.
- When you minimize an AI Overview, it remains collapsed above the thread until you expand it.
- If you don’t have an AI Overview, at the top of the thread, select Summarize this email.
- Android, iPhone, and iPad only: For emails that contain a to-do with a deadline required from you, an AI Overview can appear with the following information:
- The deadline
- The task required from you
- A short summary of the email
- A "Remind me" button
Show an AI Overview at the top of an email thread
Important: By default, Google Workspace smart features are off in:
- The European Economic Area
- Japan
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app

- In the top left corner, tap Menu
Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Under “General,” tap Google Workspace smart features.
- Next to “Smart features in Google Workspace,” tap the box.

- To hide the AI Overview, uncheck the box next to “Google Workspace smart features.” This also turns off other Gemini in Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel. Learn about Google Workspace smart features.

Create a task in an AI Overview
If an email thread mentions a to-do with a due date and has an AI Overview, you can create a task.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
- Open a thread with an AI Overview.
- At the top, tap Remind me.
- Select a date for your task.
After you create a task:
- To find your task, go to:
- In the AI Overview, to:
- Change task details: Tap Edit reminder.
- Complete the task: Tap Mark complete.
- Reopen the task: Tap Mark incomplete.
