If available, Gemini in Gmail can generate short summaries of messages in your inbox, which can help you quickly decide how to handle a message without opening it.
Availability
To get summaries with Gemini in Gmail, you need:
- The latest version of the Gmail app for Android.
- An eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Learn about Gemini features and plans.
How summaries with Gemini in Gmail work
- Gemini in Gmail can generate summaries that:
- Are up to 2 lines long.
- Are based on the content of the message thread.
- Appear in your inbox, below the subject line of eligible messages.
- Replaces the message preview.
- Message summaries are indicated with a summary icon
.
- When a message with new information arrives in the thread, Gemini in Gmail updates the summary.
- Some messages have Gemini summaries, while others do not, and both types can appear together in your inbox.
- If a summary is incorrect, you can send feedback about it to Google.
Show summaries in your inbox
Important: By default, Google Workspace smart features are turned off in:
- The European Economic Area
- Japan
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- On your device, open the Gmail app

- In the top left corner, tap Menu
Settings.
- Turn on:
- Google Workspace smart features
- Conversation view
- Conversation list density: Choose Default or Comfortable.
- If you choose Compact, summaries do not appear in your inbox.
Tip: To hide summaries, turn off Google Workspace smart features. This also turns off other Gemini in Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel.
