Manage backup payment methods

To help avoid disruptions to your Google Play subscriptions and other eligible purchases, you can turn on one or more backup payment methods for your Google Account.

Allow multiple payment methods to be used as backups

If your primary payment method can’t be charged, you can authorize Google to charge the payment methods saved to your Google Account. You can choose one or more backup payment methods. If you turn on this feature, Google will attempt to charge your selected backup payment methods for eligible purchases made through Google Play and across Google products and services if your primary payment method fails.

If you turn on this feature, new payment methods you add to your Google Account will automatically be included as backup payment methods unless you manually unselect them. You can select which payment methods can be used as backups or turn off this feature at any time. To turn on Backup payment methods:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to play.google.com.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Select Payments & subscriptions.
  4. Tap Payment methods.
  5. If you find “Backup payment methods:”
    1. Turn on Backup payment methods
    2. Select the payment methods you want to use as your backups.
  6. If you don’t find “Backup payment methods:”
    • You may be using a prior version of this feature that only allows you to set a single backup payment method per subscription. When you purchase a new subscription through Google Play, you’ll be asked whether you want to turn on the new backup payment methods feature. This feature allows you to set multiple backup payment methods.

To turn off this setting:

  1. Go to “Backup payment methods” as described above.
  2. Turn off Backup payment methods Toggle off.

Important: Currently, multiple backup payment methods are only available for subscriptions purchased through Google Play. They’ll be available for more Google Play purchases and additional Google products and services in the future. Check here for updates on which Google Play purchases are eligible for multiple backup payment methods. Learn how this setting applies to other Google products and services.

Add a backup payment method for an individual subscription

Important: This is only applicable if you don’t have access to multiple backup payment methods as described above.

To help avoid disruptions to your subscriptions, you can add a backup payment method from your Google Account for individual subscriptions. If your primary payment method doesn’t work, your backup payment method will be charged. You can remove backup payment methods at any time.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to subscriptions on Google Play.
  2. Select the subscription.
  3. Tap Backup payment method and then Setup.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Supported backup payment methods

Not all payment methods can be used as a backup payment method, including but not limited to cash and redirect banking. If your payment method doesn't appear in the list, it can't be used as a backup.
