To fix issues with the family payment method, follow the instructions in this article.

Use this page to troubleshoot if you:

  • Can’t sign up for Family Library.
  • Can’t make a purchase with your family payment method.
  • Receive an error message regarding your family payment method.
  • Can’t add items to your Family Library.
  • Are prompted to update your family payment method.
  • Are unable to invite new members to your family group.

Important: Only a family manager can add, associate, edit, or unlink a family payment method.

Basic troubleshooting steps

Check if your family payment method is valid
  1. Open the Google Play app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods.
  4. Find the credit or debit card designated as your family payment method and make sure that it’s valid.
Change your family payment method
  1. Open the Google Play app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods and then Change family payment method.
  4. Select the payment method you want to use as your family payment method.
  5. Tap Continue.
Unlink your family payment method & sign-up for Family Library again
  1. Open the Google Play app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods and then Unlink family payment method.
  4. Tap Unlink.
  5. To sign-up for Family Library again:
    1. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
    2. Tap Settings and then Family and then Sign up for Family Library.

Changes for users in India

Important: Family Library and family payment method are no longer available in India.

Here are the key changes:

  • New sign-ups for Family Library are no longer available in India.
  • Current Family Library users can no longer update their family payment method.
  • Current Family Library users can keep their active family payment method and continue to use the service as before. However, they can’t invite new members to their family group. Once the active family payment method expires, they can’t add new items to the Family Library.
  • Current Family Library users need to unlink their family payment method if they want to invite new family members to their family group to share Google's Family services or if they want to remove their family payment method. Once the family payment method is unlinked, they can’t sign up for Family Library again.

How can I unlink my family payment method?

On Android:

  1. Open the Google Play app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods and then Unlink family payment method.
  4. Tap Unlink.

On computer:

  1. Go to https://play.google.com/.
  2. At the top right, click the Profile icon.
  3. Click Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods and then Unlink family payment method.
  4. Click Unlink.

On iPhone and iPad:

  1. Go to https://play.google.com/.
  2. At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Payment methods and then Unlink family payment method.
  4. Tap Unlink.
How’s the Family group impacted when the family payment method is unlinked?

Once the family manager unlinks their family payment method, all family members will lose access to shared content in the Family Library. Only the original purchaser can access any items previously shared.

If a family manager is unable to invite new members to their family group—usually due to a Family Library setup, unlinking the family payment method will remove this restriction and allow the invitations to be sent.

Can I sign up for Family Library again if I unlink my family payment method?

Unfortunately, Family Library is no longer available in India. Once the family manager decides to unlink their family payment method, they can’t sign up for Family Library again.

How can I remove my family payment method?

To remove your family payment method, you must first unlink it. Once unlinked, to complete the removal:

On computer:

  1. Go to Payment methods on Google Play.
  2. Click Edit payment methods.
  3. Under the payment method you want to remove, click Remove and then Remove.

On Android:

  1. Go to Payment methods on Google Play.
  2. Tap More payment settings.
  3. If asked, sign in to Google payments center.
  4. Under the payment method you want to remove, tap Remove and then Remove.
How can family members make purchases without a family payment method?

If you’re the family manager without a family payment method, your family members can request your approval to make a purchase. You can complete the purchase with any payment method you add to your Google Play account, including Google Play gift cards.

Family members can ask for family manager’s permission to purchase or download content on Google Play by utilizing Purchase Approvals on Google Play.
