Spending controls

The spending controls for payment cards added to Google Wallet for kids aren’t available on Google Wallet or on Family Link. Some card issuers provide spending controls.

Tip: Check with the card issuer to confirm whether they offer spending controls.

What happens when the child turns 13 (or the applicable age in your country)

Important: The child’s age of consent may vary by country. Learn more about your country’s age requirements.

When your child turns 13 (or the applicable age in your country), they can choose to:

  • Take no action and continue their current parental supervision.
  • Update their Google Account and continue their current parental supervision.
  • Update their Google Account and stop parental supervision.

Learn more about what happens once your child chooses to manage their own account.

You and your child will receive reminder emails to notify you that your child can choose to update their Google Account and stop parental supervision. You'll receive these emails leading up to your child’s birthday that marks the age of consent, including:

  • 30 days prior
  • 7 days prior
  • On their birthday

If they decide to update their Google Account, you'll receive another email.

What happens when parental supervision stops?

Your child will now be able to:

  • Add payment cards to Google Wallet or Google Pay on their own.
  • Add any passes supported by Google Wallet and continue using any previously added passes. Learn more about supported cards and passes. If you previously blocked passes for your child, your child will now be able to access Wallet’s passes features.
  • Use payment cards in Google Wallet, including any payment cards added before parental supervision stops, to:
    • Pay on apps and websites with the Google Pay button.
    • Autofill payment info in Chrome to checkout faster online.
    • Pay across Google on Google Play Store, YouTube, and more.

Tip: For added security, any payment method added before your child turns 13 (or the applicable age in your country) that they continue to use after they update their account, will require a one-time CVV code confirmation before it can be used for transactions online, in-app or across Google.

As a parent, you can no longer:

  • Find your child’s transactions in Family Link or receive email notifications of new transactions.
    • Tip: You may still be able to view their transactions directly from the card issuer’s site or app.
  • Add or remove payment cards for your child.
    • Tip: If you don't want your child to continue using the card after they update their account, you must remove the payment card before they update. Cards that remain in their Google Account at the time of update can no longer be removed by the parent.
  • Monitor your child’s transactions through Family Link or email notifications.
  • Block your child’s access to the Wallet passes features.
