Set up & manage backup payment methods

Depending on your country of residence and the products or services you use, you can set up one or more backup payment methods. These backup payment methods are used if your primary payment method can’t be charged, which can help prevent interruptions to your subscriptions.

Important:

  • Not all payment methods can be used as a backup payment method.
  • Bank accounts can’t be used as an automatic payment method.

Backup payment methods can help avoid interruptions to your subscriptions. Find steps to manage your payment methods through Google payment info.

The feature is currently available for subscriptions purchased through Google Play and YouTube, and may be available in other Google products and services in the future.

If you enable backup payment methods:

  • If your primary payment method can’t be charged, Google will attempt to charge your selected backup payment methods. This applies to eligible purchases made through Google Play and across other Google products and services.
  • A new payment method that you add to your Google Account will automatically be included as backup payment methods unless you manually deselect them.

On Google Play, YouTube, and other Google products, backup payment methods are available for select purchases such as apps, in-app items, books, movies, and subscriptions.

To set up a backup payment method for these products and services:

  1. Go to payments.google.com.
  2. Select Subscriptions & Services.
  3. Look for "Backup payment methods" above your subscription section.
    • If you find “Backup payment methods:”
      1. Click Manage and then select the toggle to enable the toggle under “Manage backup payment methods.” to enable the functionality.
      2. Select which payment method you’d like to set as your backup, or add a new payment method to use as a backup.
      3. Press Save to implement the changes.
    • If you don’t find “Backup payment methods:”
      • Some products and versions only allow you to set a single backup payment method per subscription.
      • When you purchase a new subscription through Google Play, you’ll be asked whether you want to turn on the new backup payment methods feature. This feature allows you to set multiple backup payment methods for eligible products and services.
