Update Nest products and apps

Nest products with a stable internet connection automatically update their software. Updates are rolled out gradually, so there may be a delay before your product receives the latest version.

You can also set your phone to automatically install the latest version of the Nest app and the Google Home app.

Update the Home app & Nest app

If you need to troubleshoot an issue, make sure that you have the latest version of the app that includes the latest bug fixes and features. It's recommended that you set your phone to get automatic app updates so you get the latest features and improvements as soon as they're available. Refer to Google Home app release notes.

Troubleshooting

If a new software version is available for your thermostat but it hasn't been updated, it could be due to:

  • Your thermostat isn't connected to a reliable internet connection through the Wi-Fi network. Your thermostat or the app lets you know when there's a connection issue. Refer to Nest thermostat is offline.
  • The battery charge is below 3.7 volts. Your thermostat waits until the battery is charged enough to update its software. Refer to Troubleshoot when your thermostat won’t turn on.
  • The heating or cooling system is running. Turn your thermostat off to check if that fixes the issue. Refer to Nest thermostat Off mode.
  • There's a problem with the wiring. You need to fix any wiring issues before your thermostat can update its software.

Some thermostat models can receive updates regardless of whether it has been added to an account in the app, as long as it's connected to Wi-Fi.
