Data that's shared with Works with Nest developers

As of 29 September 2023, Works With Nest (WWN) connections no longer work and can’t be accessed. For more information, please see this community forum post.

Data can no longer be shared with Works with Nest developers over a Works with Nest connection. Developers are also required to delete any stored data according to the Nest Developer Terms of Service.

Works with Nest (WWN) was the original way that third-party partners could access and control your Nest products. They were fully integrated with a Nest product and could check and change its status.

Works with Google Home (WWGH), formerly Works with Hey Google, enables Google Assistant to control all your connected devices. In the Google Home app, you can create Routines to automatically start one or more of your devices. You'll have other options for device control from partners that offer Device Access integrations.

Data that was shared over a Works with Nest connection was limited to categories of information listed on the permission screen and you can review these categories below. Personal data, such as your email address, wasn't shared with developers through Works with Nest connections.

You’re in control of access to your data

Nest requires the developer to tell you about the categories of information the Works with Nest (WWN) connection is requesting. You should review the developer’s privacy policy carefully before granting any permissions to understand how the developer will use your information and why the connection needs that specific information.

Note: Nest doesn’t control the developer’s use of any data that you choose to share with them through a Works with Nest connection.

Your data is shared in a limited way

When you’re setting up or using a WWN connection there’s no personal information – such as your email address – exchanged. We limit the type of information accessed by WWN connections, but a connection will request access to basic data so it can work.

Categories of data that can be shared through a WWN connection

The various categories of Nest data a developer can request to access from a Nest user through a Works with Nest connection are explained below.

Your data is secured

All WWN developers are also required to follow a list of specific guidelines that limit how they can use the information that you’ve agreed to share. Nest restricts developer access to your data using widely used OAuth 2.0 standard. We use encryption technologies like HTTPS and Transport Layer Security to keep your data private while in transit.

You can always change your mind

If you ever change your mind after you grant access to your data, you can also remove a WWN connection directly from the Nest app. After a connection is removed, developers cannot collect any additional data and are required to delete any stored data according to the Nest Developer Terms of Service.

Please read our privacy statement

For complete details on how we keep your information private and secure, please see our privacy statement which describes how we handle personal data, data sharing and access.
