If your home will be unoccupied for an extended period of time, like a long holiday, you can set your Google Nest thermostat to Off mode.
This article applies to the following Google Nest thermostats models in Europe that have the Heat Link: |
|
Nest Thermostat E |
Nest Learning Thermostat |
What Off mode does
- Off mode disables all regular heating schedules. Your thermostat won’t turn on heating and won’t maintain your Eco Temperatures.
- Off mode doesn’t turn off the power to your Nest thermostat or your system.
- Your thermostat will still use Safety Temperatures to protect your home during extreme cold temperatures. This way, your thermostat can help prevent possible damage from frozen water pipes and still work to save energy.
- Your thermostat will continue to record your Energy History. You’ll see an Off icon in the app when you
check your history. - Your thermostat will stay connected to the internet. So you'll still be able to control it with the app, and it can automatically download software updates.
- To completely prevent your Nest thermostat from activating your home’s system, even if temperatures reach extreme levels, you'll also need to turn off Safety Temperatures, your domestic hot water schedule, and bacteria prevention. Go to the last section of this article for instructions.
Off mode compared to Eco Temperatures
- Off and Eco modes can both help you save energy. You’ll probably save more energy with Off mode, but it will take longer to return your home to a comfortable temperature.
- When your thermostat is set to Eco, it will run heating to try to maintain Eco Temperatures.
- When your thermostat is set to Off, it will only turn on heating in extreme conditions to maintain Safety Temperatures.

Note: If your domestic hot water hasn’t been heated in the last 48 hours because of a gap in your schedule or if you’ve turned your hot water schedule off, your Nest thermostat will automatically heat your hot water tank to help prevent bacterial growth if Bacteria Prevention is enabled.
Turn off Safety Temperatures
To completely prevent your thermostat from turning on heating, you need to disable Safety Temperatures and Bacteria Prevention.
Important: Your Nest thermostat uses the Safety Temperature to help prevent your pipes from freezing if your home starts to get too cold. When the Safety Temperature is disabled, your thermostat can’t help prevent your home from reaching dangerously low temperatures.
You can set your Safety Temperature to off from the Equipment menu on your thermostat or with the app. For detailed instruction, see the article linked below.
Turn off bacteria prevention
Important: Your Nest thermostat uses Bacteria Prevention to help prevent the growth of certain bacteria, such as Legionella.
