The Nest app and Google Home app lets you control and get information about your Google Nest Protect with a computer, phone or tablet that’s connected to the internet. Sign into your account in the app to check and manage all the Nest Protects in your home.
Adding a new Protect to the Nest app
During setup, you’ll add Protect to your account in the Nest app or Home app. Use the app on your phone or tablet for Protect setup.

Quick tips
Check the status of your Nest Protects
On the Nest app
To check the status of your Nest Protects, select the Protect icon on the Nest app home screen.
Tap on one of your Protects, and a pop-up displays the status of the following:
- Carbon or smoke alarms
- Battery and sensor
- Date and time of the last test and internet connection
Swipe left or right to switch between each of your Protects.
On the Home app
To check the status of your Nest Protects, tap and hold the Smoke & CO tile on your Home app. Tap the tile of your Protect to check their status.
How to get to Nest Protect Settings
- On the app home screen, select Protect.
- Tap Settings
in the top right corner of the screen.
- Basic settings apply to all your Protects. Select a Protect to check and manage its individual settings.
Sound Check
Set your Protect to check its sensors, power, and Wi-Fi connection on a monthly basis.
Tap the switch to turn it on.

Silencing alarms
Turn this on if you want to be able to silence an alarm with the Nest app or Home app.

Tip: This option is only available in the 2nd generation Nest Protect. To know more, go to How to tell which Nest Protect you have.
Works with Protect
If you have a Google Nest thermostat in the same Nest home, you can turn emergency shutoff on
so that your thermostat automatically turns off if Protect detects smoke or CO.
If you have a Google Nest camera, video capture automatically turns on and record a clip when
there is a smoke or CO alarm.
This feature is only available in the Nest app.

What to Do gives you useful advice on how to prepare for an emergency ahead of time. It includes how to plan an evacuation, safely exit, and more. When an emergency occurs, you’ll also get essential tips and an emergency number button so you can call quickly.

This feature is only available in the Nest app.
Nest Sense
Check the different Nest Protect features. You can turn On or Off Pathlight, Nightly Promise, Steam Check, and Heads-Up.
Brightness
Spoken language
Here you can choose which language Nest Protect should speak.
Changing this setting only affects one Protect’s language. To learn more, go to Change the language your Nest Protect speaks.
Wi-Fi connection
Your Nest Protects need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network to work together.
What to do when you change your Wi-Fi password or replace your router
Tip: Write down the entry keys for all of your Protects and keep it in a safe place in case you need to update your Wi-Fi information.
