If your Wi-Fi network is listed in the Google Home app but your Nest speaker or display can’t connect to it and complete setup, follow this article's troubleshooting steps.
Initial checklist
Important: Your speaker or display might not be able to connect to public Wi-Fi networks. This includes business networks, shared apartment networks, school dorm networks, school networks, mobile hotspots, and pocket Wi-Fi devices.
Before you get started, make sure that:
- The Nest speaker or display is powered on and plugged into a wall outlet.
- Other devices can connect to your Wi-Fi network. This helps confirm the network is available.
- If the network is unavailable, reboot the router.
- If the reboot doesn’t fix the problem, check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for outages in your area or if any of your network settings were recently changed.
- The Wi-Fi password is correct.
- Your mobile device is updated:
- Android phone or tablet with Android 9.0 or later
- iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.0 or later
- You have the most recent version of the Google Home app
.
- Android: Get the latest version Google Home app
- iOS and iPad OS: Get the latest version Google Home app
- The Nest speaker or display is within 15-20 ft (4-6 m) of the Wi-Fi router.

Advanced troubleshooting
Important: Hotspots may work, but they’re not officially supported on Google Nest and Home devices. A hotspot’s availability depends on factors such as the distance to a carrier tower, interference, and your data plan. Some carriers may have additional charges for use of mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.
-
Set up a temporary mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.
-
Once the mobile hotspot is turned on, set up the device and connect to the mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.
-
If your device connects to the hotspot, it means your device can connect to Wi-Fi, but not to your network. Reach out to your network provider for assistance.
