Control smart home devices by voice

You can use voice commands to manage devices that you've added to the Google Home app. These can be media devices, speakers and displays, lights, thermostats, and much more.

To use a voice command on a Google Nest or Home speaker or display, you can say "Hey Google" or "OK Google" and then the command.

To use a voice command on your Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer (4K), press and hold the Voice Remote's microphone button and state the command. No need to say “Hey Google” or “OK Google.”

If you have Look and Talk (English only) or quick phrases (US English only) enabled on your Nest Hub Max, you can also activate Google Assistant without "Hey Google."

  • TVs that work with Google Cast.

Tip: For TV series, each session usually starts where the previous session ended. For The CW, each session starts from the latest aired episode.

Important: During group playback, volume commands only change the device you said the voice command to.

Alarms

To do this:

Fix a problem

Check these things first

  • Is your speaker or display and smart device plugged into a wall outlet and powered on?
  • Are your speaker or display and other smart devices set up on the same Wi-Fi network?
  • Are you using the same Google Account on your mobile device and in the Google Home app?
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. At the top right, tap your account.
    3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Google device. If correct, tap Close to exit the account window. To switch accounts, tap the drop down and then another account or Add another account.
  • Are you in the same room as the device you’re using for voice commands?
Can't find Works with Google device in the Google Home app

If you add, update, or change a device in the partner app and can't find the device in the Google Home app, try to sync the smart home control device and your speaker or display.

To sync your devices in the Google Home app:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your account.
  3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Google device. If correct, tap Close to exit the account window. To switch accounts, tap the drop down and then another account or Add another account.
  4. Resync your linked smart home devices with the Google Home app. You can either:

    • Tap Devices and swipe down with your finger on the screen.

    • Tap Settings and then Works with Google under “Services” and then the manufacturer of your device and then Reconnect account.

  5. There will be a spinning circle. The sync is complete when the circle disappears.

  6. Tap Devices and check for your device.

To sync your devices with your voice:

Important:

  • You need to set up some devices in the manufacturer's app and the Google Home app. Use the correct setup instructions for your device.

  • If you sync multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.

To do this:

Say "Hey Google" or "Ok Google," then:

Sync all devices

"Sync my devices."

Sync a device type

"Sync my lights."

Google Assistant can't control device

To fix the issue, you can try to rename your device.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

  2. Tap Settings .

  3. Under "Devices, groups & rooms", tap your device's tile.

  4. Tap Name or Device information and then Device name.

Tips for renaming your device:

  • Don't include numbers, special characters, or room names.

  • Avoid similar names (for example, "Table light left" and "Table light right").
