Learn how to set up your First Alert Smoke & and Carbon Monoxide alarm as a compatible replacement for your Nest Protect (2nd gen) once it expires. You can set up the alarm through the Google Home app and control it to receive notifications.
What you need
- You must migrate your Nest account to a Google Account.
- Install the latest version of the Google Home app

- Install the latest version of the First Alert app
- Ensure that your First Alert account is linked with the Nest App
or Google Home
to interconnect with Nest Protect devices.
Install your First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm
- Open the First Alert App.
- Select Add Device.
- Do not mount the device yet, instructions will be provided later on.
- Make sure to pull the battery tab from the device and follow the voice prompts.
- Scan the QR code.
- Configure the device with its location, announced name, and device name.
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi. Select your Wi-Fi name and enter the password.
- Once the device is connected, wait for the prompt to be registered successfully.
- If you have other devices to add, follow the steps to ensure that they interconnect seamlessly.
- Mount your device:
- On a ceiling (recommended), it could monitor both smoke and carbon monoxide levels.
- On the wall, make sure that it is placed within 12 inches of the ceiling.
- If you have a Nest Protect device, tap Link.
Add your First Alert alarm to the Google Home app & interconnect with Nest Protect
Important: If you still have a Nest Protect, make sure it's within range.
This setup allows the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm to communicate with Nest Protect, wherein each device can relay a smoke or CO event to the other compatible alarms in the home. After following the steps above, continue below:
- Open the Google Home app
.
- Login to your account.
Tip: If you already have a Nest account, migrate it to Google to use with the device or feature.
- Tap Continue
Next.
- For new Google Home app users, you should be redirected to a third-party partner login page. Enter your credentials and select Approve.
- If you haven’t connected your device from the First Alert app or the initial setup was discontinued, you can refer to Connect third-party smart home devices in the Google Home app.
- Select on your device
choose or add your address
to select a new home address
Next
tap OK to confirm changes.
- Assign your device to a room
Done.
Finish set up
