Nest Protect now available in the Google Home app

When you enroll in the Google Home app Public Preview with your Nest Protect, you’ll be able to check and control your device along with your other Home app devices. Your settings, device status, and notifications will be available in the Home app.

If you decide you don’t want your Protect in the Home app, you still have access to it in the Nest app.

What you need

  • A home you manage in the Nest app
  • Your Google Account or a migrated Nest account
  • The latest version of the Home app and your device’s OS
  • A Nest Protect (2nd gen)
  • You must be in Public Preview in the Google Home app

  • Emergency contacts
  • What to do

Important: You need to use the Nest app for the initial setup of your Nest Protect or to perform a factory reset.

Troubleshoot account migration issues

If you’re unable to find your Protect in the Google Home app, this may mean your Nest account migration to a Google account isn’t complete.

Check if you’ve migrated to a Google account

  1. Open the Nest app Nest app.
  2. Tap Settings Nest settings icon.
    • If "Migrate to a Google Account" doesn’t appear on the screen, then your account has been migrated.

Finish account migration

  1. Open the Nest app Nest app.
  2. Tap Settings Nest settings icon and then Account and then Verify you’ve signed in with the account you want to migrate.
  3. Tap Migrate to a Google Account.
  4. The app walks you through account migration.

If you can’t find the Protect after account migration, you’ll have to reset and re-pair your device with the new Google account.

  1. Press and hold your Protect’s button. It will chime and glow blue. Continue to hold the button down.
  2. Release the button when your Protect starts to say its version number.
  3. Your Protect will start a verbal countdown and tell you it’s erasing all your settings.
    • To cancel the factory reset, press Protect’s button again during the countdown.
  4. After a few seconds, your Protect will reset to its factory default settings. You can then go through setup with the Nest app and add it to the new Google account.
