Moving guide for Nest devices

When you move to a new home, you can leave your Nest devices behind for the next resident, bring your device with you, or set up one left by a previous resident. Find your device below to learn more and get started.

Leave a device for the next resident

Important: This action will clear your data from the device and can't be undone.

To give a device to another person, first perform a factory reset:

  1. Open the Google Home app .

  2. Tap and hold your device's tile.

  3. Tap Settings and then Remove device and then Remove.​

  4. Perform a factory reset. A factory reset will reset your speaker or display to its default factory settings.

Bring a device to your new home

If you're changing your Wi-Fi network

If you bring your speaker or display to a new home and you have a new Wi-Fi router or internet service provider (ISP), change the Wi-Fi network of your Google speaker or display.

If your router and Wi-Fi network will stay the same

Once you've set up your Wi-Fi network in your new home, plug in your speaker or display. It will automatically connect to your network and be ready to use.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

If you decide to use a speaker or display left by its previous owner:

  1. Perform a factory reset if it hasn't already been done.

  2. Set up your speaker or display in the Google Home app.

  • If you have a Nest Aware subscription, make sure that you cancel your subscription.

If your Wi-Fi network will change

If you bring your thermostat to a new house or flat, and you have a new Wi-Fi router or ISP, connect your thermostat to the new Wi-Fi network.

If your router and Wi-Fi network will stay the same

Once you've set up your Wi-Fi network in your new home, install your thermostat. It will automatically connect to your network and be ready to use.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

If the Wi-Fi password or name (SSID) was changed, your thermostat and other devices in your home may disconnect.

Follow the directions below to update the Wi-Fi information for your thermostat. Some other devices may automatically reconnect after you do.

  1. In the Google Home app , tap your thermostat on the home screenand thenSettings and thenRemove.
  2. On your thermostat, go to Settings and thenAccountand thenDisconnect.
  3. At the top left of the Google Home app , tap and then Set up a Nest product.
  4. When you reach the “Get started” screen, select Already installed.
  5. You can then skip most of the usual setup steps until you reach the Wi-Fi setup step. You can then enter the new password and network name.

To give a device to another person:

  1. Remove device from the Nest app.

  2. Perform a factory reset on your device using the links below. This will delete all of your personal information from the product and let the new resident add it to their account in the Nest app.

If you want to bring your product to your next home, refer to Manage homes and products with the Nest app.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

Important: If you set up your Nest camera and it's already used by another account, you need to wait for the current video history to expire. Once it expires, you can add it to your account. This can take up to 60 days, but may happen sooner.

  1. Perform a factory reset on your device if it hasn't been done already.

  2. Set up your device in the Nest app:
