How to replace your Nest Protect after expiration

To meet certification standards, 2nd gen Nest Protect must be replaced after 10 years from the date of manufacture. When you’ve determined that your device needs to be replaced, you’ll need to select a replacement device, uninstall your Nest Protect, and set up your replacement device.

Select a replacement device

We've partnered with First Alert, a trusted brand in fire safety, to offer the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm as a compatible replacement for your 2nd gen Nest Protect when used with the Google Home app. You can learn more about this device on First Alert’s website.

Important: First Alert Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm requires the Google Home app to work with your other Nest Protect devices.

Uninstall your Nest Protect

Wired

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker box.
  2. Turn Protect counterclockwise to disconnect it from its backplate.
  3. Unplug the 120 V connector from the back of Protect.
  4. Unscrew the backplate.

Battery powered

  1. Turn Protect counterclockwise to disconnect it from its backplate.
  2. Unscrew the backplate.

Set up your replacement device
