Navigate the Google Home app
The Google Home app is divided into several sections to help you easily find what you need.
Favorites tiles can let you:
- Check the status of a device or automation.
- Touch and hold to open all device controls or settings.
- Quickly access basic controls:
- Tap to turn a device on or off.
- Tap to start an action or automation.
- Use a slider to adjust brightness or media volume.
Customize Favorites
- To change the actions, automations, or devices on your Favorites, scroll down and tap Edit
. Check or uncheck the box next to the tile to add or remove it from Favorites.
- To organize your Favorites, tap Reorder to drag the tiles into the position you want.
Other key features in Favorites
- Home selector: Displays the name of your home at the top. If you have multiple homes set up, tap your home name to switch between homes.
- Inbox: Shows important notifications about your home. This includes device issues, suggested automations, invitations to join a home, and more.
- Device categories: These appear at the top.
- Cameras: Shows your camera’s video. Multiple compatible cameras are displayed together.
- Lighting: Control all the compatible lights in your home or in a specific room.
- Wi-Fi: Runs speed tests and manages your Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi network and settings.
- Climate: Displays your thermostat and temperature sensors in one place.
- Media mini-player: Shows what media you're currently playing and which device it's on.
Device controls
Touch and hold your device's tile to open all of its settings or controls. Different types of devices have different controls. Some device tiles show the device status or certain controls.
- Google Nest and Home speakers and displays:
- Control the speaker or display’s volume and equalization (EQ).
- Play, pause, skip, or stop media.
- Access settings.
- Google streaming devices:
- Control the display’s volume or access settings.
- Play, pause, skip, or stop media.
- Pixel Tablet (Hub Mode only): Control the Charging Speaker Dock's volume and stop casting.
- Cameras: Check the live video stream from your compatible cameras. Newer cameras also let you change settings and check history.
- Thermostat: Adjust your compatible thermostat's set point, change modes, and check the ambient temperature. Other settings might be available for some thermostat models.
- Lights: Turn your compatible smart lights on and off and adjust their brightness or color, if supported.
- Smart plugs: Turn your compatible smart plug on and off.
- Speaker Groups: Access the group's settings.
- Household Routines: Create automations for your home and its members.
- Home & Away Routines allow you to automatically adjust your devices, such as lights and thermostat, to different settings when you're home or away. Learn how to set up and control Home & Away Routines.
- The script editor allows you to create powerful home automations to build a personalized smart home. Learn how to create advanced home automations with the script editor.
- On Android devices, you can check and run automations created in compatible third-party apps. Learn more about third-party app automations in the Google Home app.
- Personal Routines: Create Routines that are specific to you. For example, play your favorite morning news when you dismiss an alarm.
If you want to check specific types of activity, tap Filter to select what you want to appear. Pick from any combination of events and devices to find what's most important to you. Select the filters you want to use and tap Save.
