Get help with Proactive Assistance on Googlebook

With Proactive Assistance, Gemini can show you personalized and timely suggestions. Proactive Assistance uses what’s on your screen, your notifications, location, and info from apps you select.

Before you begin

  • To access Proactive Assistance with Gemini, you must be at least 18 years old and signed into a personal Google Account on your Googlebook.
  • This feature is available in these countries and languages:
    • Australia (English only)
    • Canada (English only)
    • India (English only)
    • Japan (Japanese only)
    • Malaysia (English only)
    • Singapore (English only)
    • United States (English only)

Turn on Proactive Assistance with Gemini

To use Proactive Assistance on Googlebook, set Gemini as your default assistant and turn on Personal Intelligence. Learn more about Personal Intelligence.

To change your default assistant:

  1. Open your Googlebook's Settings app .
  2. Select Apps and then Assistant and then Digital assistants from Google.
  3. Select Gemini as your preferred assistant.

To turn on Personal Intelligence:

  1. On your Googlebook, open the Gemini app .
  2. At the top left, select Menu Menu and then your Profile picture or initial and then Personal Intelligence.
  3. Select Connected Apps.
  4. You can connect or disconnect Contacts, Google Photos if available, Google Workspace, Search services, or YouTube.
    • To connect an app: Turn it on .
    • To disconnect an app: Turn it off Toggle off.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

To manage Proactive Assistance:

  1. Open your Googlebook's Settings app .
  2. Select Proactive Assistance.
  3. Turn Use Proactive Assistance on or off.
  4. To manage which apps can connect to Proactive Assistance, select Connected apps.
    • You can turn individual apps, like Messages and Screenshots, on or off.

Personalize Proactive Assistance

You can choose your Proactive Assistance data sources in your device settings.

Gemini's Proactive Assistance data sources:

  • Your screen content, which includes notifications.
  • Personal Intelligence apps you choose to connect to Gemini. Learn more about Personal Intelligence.
  • Additional apps you choose to connect to Proactive Assistance, like Messages and Screenshots.
  • Location data.

Tip: The more data sources you let Proactive Assistance use, the more accurate suggestions will be. If you let Proactive Assistance use very few sources, suggestions might not appear as frequently or be as accurate.

To turn Proactive Assistance on or off for a specific app:

  1. Open your Googlebook's Settings app .
  2. Select Apps and then the app you want to manage.
  3. In "App info," under "Screen access," turn Proactive Assistance on or off.

Gemini can show suggestions through these Proactive Assistance features.

Get action suggestions in Google Messages

You can get action suggestions in your Google Messages app through notifications.

When someone messages you a time and place to meet, you can receive a notification with an action suggestion. The notification can include a link to Google Maps for location or a link to Calendar to check your schedule or add a calendar invite.

Get action suggestions in other apps

You can get action suggestions when you select relevant text in apps like Gmail, Calendar, or Google Maps. For example, open a location in Maps if someone mentions it in an email text.

  1. Highlight the relevant text, like a date or an address.
  2. Right-click the highlighted text.
  3. Choose the suggested app from the menu. For example:
    • To check your schedule: Select Calendar to view your schedule for that date.
    • To find a location: Select Maps to open the address in Google Maps.

Fix issues with Proactive Assistance

If suggestions don’t show when Proactive Assistance is on, your data might not be processed yet or Proactive Assistance might not have enough info to give suggestions. Charge your device and wait at least 24 hours. You can receive more suggestions over time as you continue to use your Googlebook.

Turn Proactive Assistance on

Check that Proactive Assistance is turned on for your device.

  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Proactive Assistance in the left navigation panel.
  3. Check that Proactive Assistance is toggled on.
Download the model over Wi-Fi

To make Proactive Assistance work, it needs to download models. It only supports model downloads over a Wi-Fi connection.

If your Googlebook isn’t connected to Wi-Fi, you can find a “Wi-Fi connection needed” message. To continue, connect to Wi-Fi.

Update required apps

Before you can use Proactive Assistance, you need to update some apps.

  1. On your Googlebook, open the Google Play Store app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, select your avatar.
  3. Select Manage apps & device and then Updates available.
  4. Update any pending apps.
Restore Proactive Assistance settings

Your device backup doesn’t include Proactive Assistance settings. When you restore your device, re-enable your settings and reprocess all your data.

Use different accounts

If you have multiple accounts on your device, Proactive Assistance always uses the primary account as the data source for its suggestions. If you switch to a different account, you need to select Proactive Assistance features again. When you do this, all data processed under your previous account is deleted from the device.

Use Google Workspace data for suggestions

To let Proactive Assistance access your Workspace data, like Gmail, Calendar, or Keep, you need to turn on the smart features in your Workspace settings. To know whether you already turned this on, learn about smart features and controls for Google Workspace and other Google products.

Understand Proactive Assistance's privacy & security

Proactive Assistance is an opt-in feature. Once you enable Proactive Assistance, you're always in control and can turn it off at any time. Learn how to turn Proactive Assistance off.

When you use Proactive Assistance, you agree to Google's Terms of Service, AI Prohibited Use Policy, and Privacy Policy.

Always review suggested actions before you proceed. This is especially important when recommendations involve:

  • Updated contact info
  • Changes to an invoice or payment reminders
  • Calendar invitations
  • Changes to existing appointments
  • Any other sensitive info

If you find a suspicious recommendation, ignore or reject the action and manually review the suggested change before you apply it.
