During text input, Quick Insert provides relevant information and assistive tools directly at your fingertips. You do not need to leave your current app or input field to find what you need.
With Quick Insert, you can:
- Add contacts: Search and insert contact details (names, phone numbers, addresses, emails) directly into the text field.
- Access clipboard & emojis: Quickly access recent clipboard items and emojis.
- Add expressions: Search and add expressions including emojis, GIFs, and stickers.
- Insert local images: Insert local images and photos. Quick Insert on Googlebook does not support inserting local files
- Use writing tools & translation: Quickly access tools to rewrite, proofread, or translate text.
- Perform searches: Perform searches across local photos, clipboard, contacts, and web history.
- Get suggestions for relevant information: Receive suggestions based on typed content, such as flight numbers, hotel booking references, and loyalty numbers. This requires Proactive Assistance to be enabled.
- Open Rambler: Rambler transforms natural, spoken thought into clean, well-structured written text.
Get started with Quick Insert
- To open Quick Insert, place your cursor in any editable text field on your Googlebook.
- Press the Quick Insert key
on your physical keyboard or use the keyboard shortcut Alt + i.
- Select the item you want to insert, or the action you want to take. To insert an item using your keyboard, use the arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter.
- The selected content will be automatically inserted into the text field you have open, or the writing tool will apply its function.
Use Quick Insert
Search for contentYou can perform searches across personal data sources on your Googlebook with Quick Insert. This means you will not need to switch apps. Search your contacts, clipboard items, local photos, and web history.
To get Chrome suggestions in other apps:
- On your Googlebook, open Chrome
.
- At the top right, select More
Settings
- Select Tabs and tab groups.
- Turn on Get Chrome suggestions in other apps.
To search your web history:
- Place your cursor in an editable text field.

Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
In the search bar, type a query for what you need.- For example, type a contact name, photo name, copied text, or a visited website.
- Quick Insert will display relevant results from your contacts, clipboard, local photos, and web history.
- Select the desired result to insert it into your text field.
Quick Insert provides fast access to your most recently used content, saving you time from searching. You can quickly insert recent clipboard text, recently used emojis, and recent local photos.
- Place your cursor in an editable text field.
- Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
- At the top of the Quick Insert menu, browse your recently accessed items.
- Select the recent item you wish to use, or use your arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter.
- The item will be instantly inserted into your text field.
Find specific items like emojis or GIFs easier. Quick Insert organizes different content types into categories.
- Place your cursor in an editable text field.
- Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
- Browse the available categories such as Expressions, Clipboard, Contacts, dates, and Calculate.
- Select a category to get its content.
- Select the item you wish to insert into your text field.
Quick Insert provides direct access to assistive writing tools, including options to rewrite, proofread, or translate your text.
- Type the text you want to modify or translate into an editable text field.
- Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
- Select a writing tool option, such as Rewrite, Proofread, or Translate.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to apply the desired action to your text.
Tip: To access writing tools and translation with an empty text field, open the Tools section of the menu and select Writing Tools or Translate.
Important: To use this feature, ensure that Proactive Assistance is enabled in your Googlebook settings. To access Proactive Assistance with Gemini, you must be at least 18 years old and signed into a personal Google Account on your Googlebook. Based on what you type, Quick Insert can provide proactive suggestions for things like flight numbers, booking references, loyalty numbers, and promo codes.
- Place your cursor in an editable text field and begin typing context, such as typing the name of an airline or hotel.
- Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
- If a relevant suggestion is available, it will appear in the Quick Insert menu.
- Select the suggestion, or highlight it and press Enter, to instantly insert the details into your text field.
Important: Quick Insert is limited to image formats such as JPG, PNG, or WebP and does not support attaching or inserting other file types.
You can use Quick Insert to add images and photos saved directly on your Googlebook. Place your cursor in an editable text field.
- Open Quick Insert by pressing the Quick Insert key
or Alt + i.
- Search for a specific image by typing a keyword, or browse your recent photos in the menu.
- Select the image you want to use, or use your arrow keys to highlight it and press Enter.
- The image will be instantly inserted into your text field.
To set a different key to act as your Quick Insert key or to remap the Quick Insert key to another function, follow the steps below:
- On your Googlebook, open the Settings app
.
- Select Devices & accessories
Keyboard
Physical keyboard.
- Under “Options,” select Modifier keys.
- Select the drop-down menu next to the key you want to change and choose the Quick Insert action from the list.
- Select Done.
Troubleshoot Quick Insert
- Check input focus: Place your cursor in an editable text input field before pressing the Quick Insert key. Quick Insert will not open otherwise.
- Verify Permissions & Consents: Grant user consent for personal data features. Also, check contact and photo permissions in your Googlebook settings.
- Check Network Connection: Connect your Googlebook to the internet for cloud-dependent features like writing tools or translation. These features require an active internet connection.
