You can use the Terminal app to access a powerful Debian Linux command-line environment directly on your Googlebook. You can install and run developer tools, code environments, and access other Linux applications. It expands your device's capabilities for advanced tasks and software development.
Set up Linux virtual machine image
When you first open the Terminal app, you need to install the virtual image.
- On your Googlebook, open the Terminal app
.
- On the prompt, select Install.
- The installation process takes several minutes. Once complete, a Linux terminal window opens automatically.
Manage the Terminal app window & tabs
- To open a new tab: At the top, select New tab

- To open a new window: At the top right, select More
New window
.
- To close a tab: On the tab you want to close, select Close
.
- To switch between tabs: Select the tab you want.

Customize the appearance of the Terminal app
You can personalize the Terminal app, including the color scheme, font, and other settings.
Manage the color schemeChange the color scheme
By default, the color scheme switches to match your system theme. You can change the color scheme in light mode and dark mode or turn off color switching to use one color scheme regardless of the system mode.
- At the top right, select More

Appearance.
- To change the color scheme based on mode:
- Light mode: Select In light mode.
- Dark mode: Select In dark mode.
- Choose your preferred color scheme.
- You can choose between a default color scheme for that mode or an imported custom color scheme.
- Select Ok.
Turn off color scheme switching
If you want to use one color scheme regardless of the system being in light or dark mode, turn off color scheme switching.
- At the top right, select More

- Turn off Switch color schemes based on system theme.
- To change the color scheme, select Color scheme.
- Choose your preferred color scheme.
- You can choose a default dark scheme, a default light scheme, or an imported custom color scheme.
- Select Ok.
Tip: To delete a saved color scheme, in the color scheme selector, select Delete
Delete.
Import a custom color scheme
- At the top right, select More

- Select +Import custom theme.
- Use a .toml file extension.
Tip: To delete a color scheme, select Delete .

- Under “Font,” you can:
- Choose your preferred font: Select Font family.
- Change the font size: Enter a number or select + or -.
- Import a custom font: Select + Import custom font.
- You can use a .ttf, .otf, .woff, or .woff2 file up to 15 MB.
Tip: To delete a font, select Delete .

You can edit and reset shortcuts for all available actions.
- At the top right, select More

- Select the action you want to set a keyboard shortcut for.
- On the popup window, you can:
- Edit a shortcut:
- Press any key combination.
- Select Save.
- Reset a shortcut: Select Reset.

- At the top right, select More

- Through this setting you can:
- Manage the notifications permission:
- If the permission isn’t granted: Next to “Notification,” select Allow.
- If the permission is granted: To change the permission, select Manage permissions.
- Manage link handling: To protect your data when you open links, you can select:
- Auto forward web URLs to the host browser
- Open links from the VM in the VM browser
- Manage port control: Turn Auto-forward all ports on or off.
- Add ports: Select the + Add port.

Share local folders
To allow the Terminal app access to your local folders on your computer:
- At the top right, select More

Shared folders.
- Under “Shared folders,” select Add folder.
- Select the folder you want the Terminal app to access.
Change advanced Terminal app settings
- At the top right, select More

Advanced.
- Through this setting you can:
- Change display resolution.
- Adjust memory size.
- Manage “Keep Awake” settings.
- Choose your console type.
Reset the Terminal app
- At the top right, select More
Settings
Recovery.
- Select Uninstall VM image.
- A popup window will appear and display an option to back up your data.
- Select Uninstall.
Access files in the Files app
You can access VM files directly in the Files app. A dedicated folder stores all your environment data, so you can browse at any time without terminal commands.
