Understand Background system services on Googlebook

To help your Googlebook work smoothly, essential built-in apps and services automatically run in the background. These are known as Background system services.

These services support core device capabilities and can’t be removed. To give you more transparency into how your laptop operates, you can review which Background system services are active. You can also review the device permissions these services use.

Background system services are marked with a gear icon across the Settings app on your device.

Find & manage Background system services

Important:

  • Changes to permissions for Background system services can affect the device experience or cause basic features to stop working.
  • Admin users can change the settings and permissions for Background system services apps. Any changes made to one of these apps can impact all users on the device.
  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Apps and then See all apps.
  3. At the top right, select More More (Vertical) and then Show system.
    • Apps that run as Background system services have the gear icon .
  4. Select a Background system service app you want to review.
  5. On the app info page, you can find details about Background system services, such as:
    • Settings
    • Permissions
    • Storage and cache used
    • Wi-Fi data usage

Check permissions that Background system services use

On the privacy dashboard, you can check which specific permissions your Background system services actively use.

  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Security & privacy and then Privacy and then Privacy dashboard.
  3. Select the permission you want to review.
  4. At the top right, select More More (Vertical) and then Show system.
    • The timeline shows Background system services that have used the selected permission. You can determine whether it’s a Background system service app if it has a gear icon .

Check data usage for Background system services apps

  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Network & internet and then Internet and then Non-carrier Data usage.
    • Under “Background system services,” you can find the data usage for these apps.

Check storage usage for Background system services apps

  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Under “System,” you can find how much data Background system services use.
  4. To understand how each Background system service app uses storage, select Apps.
  5. At the top right, select More More (Vertical) and then Show system.
    • Find a Background system service app with the gear icon to check how much storage it uses.
  6. To manage the app’s storage, select the app.
