Use Voice Access commands to control your Googlebook with your voice.
Important:
- You can use Voice Access in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, or Japanese.
- Portuguese and Japanese languages only support the top 25 commands.
Use voice commands
After you start Voice Access, you can use commands to control your Googlebook. For example, say "Open Gmail," "Scroll down," "Select compose," or "Go home." Learn more about how to turn on Voice Access.
Tips:
- You can select any text on the screen. For example, to select a link with the text "opening hours," say "Select opening hours."
- The feedback bar at the top of your screen shows what Voice Access hears and displays responses. After a command completes, Voice Access listens for the next one automatically.
- Say the item's number if Voice Access asks "Which one?" when a command applies to more than one item.
General commands

Gemini and Google Assistant
If Gemini or Google Assistant is on, you can say:
- “Hey Google, set a timer for [amount of time].”
- “Hey Google, turn on the torch.”
- “Hey Google, when was the Empire State Building built?”
- “Hey Google, who created Google?”
- “Hey Google, open Voice Access settings.”
- “Hey Google, start Voice Access.”
- This starts Voice Access listening.
Voice Access numbers
To show numbers next to interactive items, say "Show numbers." If you don't know an item's name, say "Show labels" for suggestions.
For example, if the number 7 appears next to a Save button, like this , you can say:
- “7”
- “Save”
- “Select 7”
- “Select Save”
If 2 items have the same text label or if a label is hard to pronounce, use the number. If you’re not sure which item goes with a number, say "What is [number]?"
Unlock your Googlebook and enter passwords
You can use your voice to:
- Enter your passcode on the lock screen.
- Enter passwords for Wi-Fi or other accounts.
Tip: If other people are around, you may not want to say your password out loud.
Use your voice for lock screen commands:
- To unlock your Googlebook with your voice, Voice Access must be in listening mode.
- If Voice Access isn't listening, use Gemini. Say "Hey Google, start Voice Access." This works on the lock screen.
- To trigger the unlock screen, say "Show numbers," then the number for the unlock button.
- Phonetic labels appear on the PIN pad. Use the label, like "Alpha" or "Bravo," for each number.
- For example, if your PIN is "1234," say "Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Enter."
Use your voice for password commands:
If the password text box is hidden, to reveal the characters, say "Show password."
Spell your password characters or say the phrase.
- For example, if your password is “Password123!” say "Show password," "Capital P," "One, two, three," then "Exclamation mark," "Enter."
Search in apps
In apps with a search field, you can search without selecting the bar first.
- Say "Open Maps," then "Search for coffee shops."
- Say "Open Chrome," then "Search for carpenters in Seattle."
- Say "Open YouTube," then "Search funny animal videos."
- Say "Open Gmail," then "Search hotel booking."
- Say "Open settings," then "Search accessibility."
Answer calls
To answer a call, say "Answer call."
You can set Voice Access to turn on automatically for incoming calls:
- On your Googlebook, open the Settings app
.
- Select Accessibility
Voice Access
Settings.
- Select Activation.
- Turn on Keep active during phone calls.
Tips:
- The other caller can hear your Voice Access commands.
- If you use the default setting, Voice Access stops listening when the call starts. You must end the call manually or use the screen button.
Make calls
You can make a call in 2 ways:
- Call a phone number: Say "Call [number]."
- Call a contact: Say "Call [name]."
- If multiple contacts match, Voice Access prompts you to pick one.
Tip: In English, you can say "Copy this phone number." If multiple numbers appear, choose one with the numbered labels.
Perform custom system actions
Your Googlebook has unique system actions. To find them:
- Select Voice Access
Settings
Voice Access commands.
- Under "Basics & navigation," select the action you want to perform.
Adjust the slider
Use commands to adjust sliders, like volume or video time.
- To move forward: Say "Increment [label number]."
- To move backward: Say "Decrement [label number]."
You can navigate apps without specific object numbers with grid selection.
To use the grid:
- Say "Show grid" to start.
- Say "More squares" or "Fewer squares" to resize.
- Say "Hide grid" to stop.
To interact with the grid, say a number or command:
- “3”
- “Select 7”
- “Swipe 5 up”
- “Swipe left on 12”
- “Pinch in” or “Pinch out”
- Zooms in or out, like in Maps.
- “Long press 8”
- “Drag 10”
- “Pinch out 11”
Use these commands to type, edit, and format text. Voice Access shows a blue border around editable text fields.

Tips:
- Replace [word or phrase] with your command.
- Commands with stars (*) work for characters, words, sentences, lines, or paragraphs.
- To cut or copy specific text, say "Highlight [phrase]," then "Cut" or "Copy." Move your cursor, then say "Paste."

For zoomable apps, like Maps, use grid selection and "Pinch out."
To magnify your screen, use these commands:

- Open the notification shade and select Touch to pause.
- Press your configured Bluetooth or wired switch.
- If "Time out after no speech" is on, wait 30 seconds. Learn how to change Voice Access settings.
Tip: To turn off the Voice Access app entirely:
- On your Googlebook, open the Settings app

- Select Accessibility
