Troubleshoot Voice Access

Before you troubleshoot, try these steps to fix your issue:

  1. Update to the latest version of Voice Access: Your device usually updates apps through your Play Store settings but you can check for updates manually on Google Play.
  2. Install the latest version of the Google app: If you use an old version of the Google app and say, "Ok Google," it won’t start Voice Access automatically.
  3. Use the recommended setup: You can find these in the "Check your device and settings" in Get started with Voice Access.

If Voice Access still doesn’t work, try the steps below.

Voice Access doesn't recognize your commands

If commands don't work:

  • Make sure your device connects to the internet over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
  • Move to a quiet place.
  • Speak more slowly and clearly.
  • Use a headset with a microphone.
  • Repeat your voice command.
  • Turn off vibration in your device settings. Vibration might interfere with speech recognition.
Voice Access freezes or stops in a command

If Voice Access appears to freeze, wait a few seconds. This happens if you give a long command or if another app listens at the same time.

Troubleshoot device unlock

PIN, fingerprint, and Face Unlock work well with Voice Access. To securely protect your device when you enter your PIN, Voice Access shows random words on screen, like "red" or "blue." Learn how to set screen lock on Googlebook.

You can say these words instead of your PIN numbers. To change your lock screen, go to Settings. Under “Device security,” select Security.

If Voice Access doesn’t start on the lock screen:

  1. In the Google app, go to Settings and then Voice.
  2. Turn on Unlock with Voice Match or Trusted voice.
    • To turn on Voice Access from the lock screen, say “Hey Google, start Voice Access.”
    • Voice Search: Enable "Hey Google" detection from any screen. Learn how to turn on "Hey Google."
  3. Turn on Activate on lock screen.
  4. Connect your device to a Bluetooth switch or keyboard.
  5. To start Voice Access on the lock screen, use the switch or keyboard.
  6. Set up your device for automatic unlock.
Manage battery use
While inactive, Voice Access uses almost no battery but it uses more power when it listens to your commands. If your battery drains faster than normal, connect your device to a power supply while you use Voice Access.
Use Voice Access when Do Not Disturb is on

When Do Not Disturb is on, the Voice Access notification doesn’t show on the screen. Learn how to manage timing controls on your Googlebook.

  1. Open your Googlebook’s Settings app .
  2. Select Apps & notifications and then Notifications.
  3. Select Advanced and then Do Not Disturb.
  4. Find the setting to hide notifications.
  5. Select Restrict notifications or Display options for hidden notifications and then No sound from notifications.
