Important: This process permanently erases everything on your Googlebook's hard drive, including your downloaded files.
If your Googlebook’s operating system (OS) doesn’t work properly, you can reinstall it. This process removes and reinstalls the OS.
Know when to recover
You might want to recover your device if:
- Your screen displays the error message "Googlebook OS is missing or damaged."
- Your device appears to be stuck on the same screen and restarts repeatedly.
Before you recover
Try less invasive steps before you recover your device.
- Turn your Googlebook off, then back on again.
- If your Googlebook still has an error, reset to factory settings.
Enter recovery mode
Important: You must complete this step before you start the recovery options.
On the Googlebook you want to recover:
- To enter recovery mode, disconnect anything that’s connected to the device, like a mouse or an external hard drive.
- If you have anything connected to this Googlebook, remove it.
- Press and hold Esc + F2.
- Press and quickly release the power button.
- Release Esc + F2 once the screen lights up.
Tip: When the “Start the recovery process” screen appears, your device is in recovery mode.
Recover your device
Step 1: Prepare your devicesBefore you begin, make sure you have:
- The Googlebook you want to recover.
- Another computer with the Google Chrome browser installed. You can use:
- A Chromebook
- A Windows computer
- A Mac computer
- A USB flash drive that can hold at least 32 GB.
- This process erases all files on the USB drive.
On your other computer (such as a Chromebook, Windows computer, or a Mac computer):
- Insert your USB flash drive into the working computer.
- Open Chrome
.
- Install the recovery extension.
- To open the recovery extension:
- At the top right of your browser window, select Extensions
.
- Select the Device Recovery Utility extension.
- If the extension pop-up doesn't automatically appear on your screen, make sure the Device Recovery Utility extension is turned on.
- At the top right of your browser window, select Extensions
- Select Get started
Select Googlebook.
- Use the dropdown menus to select your device’s manufacturer and product name.
- Select Continue.
- In the dropdown menu, select your USB flash drive.
- Select Continue
Create now.
- When you get a message that your recovery media is ready, remove your USB flash drive from the computer.
On your Googlebook with the error:
- Ensure the device is in recovery mode.
- Select Use USB drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Turn on the Device Recovery Utility extension
- On your computer, open Chrome
.
- At the top right, select Extensions
Manage extensions.
- Next to “Device Recovery Utility,” toggle the switch to the right.
- Optional: You can also select Details and toggle the switch to the right.
- Once the extension is on, select Extensions
select the Device Recovery Utility extension to open the pop-up.
