Manager Accounts: Unlink accounts from your manager account

To stop managing a particular client or manager account, you’ll need administrative access to that manager or client account to unlink the account from your manager account.

This article shows you how to unlink an account from a manager account or from a client account. For more information on what happens when you unlink the accounts, review About unlinking accounts from your manager account.

Instructions

To unlink an account from your manager account:

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads manager account.
  2. Select the Accounts icon Accounts icon., then select the Sub-account settings drop down.
  3. Select the accounts that you want to unlink by clicking into the check box to the left of the account name.
  4. Select the Edit drop-down menu.
  5. Select Unlink.
  6. On the next page, you’ll get a preview of how your sub-accounts will be affected by the unlinking action. Once you’ve reviewed the changes, and if you approve, select Unlink.

To unlink an account from an individual Google Ads client account:

  1. Go to Access and security within the Admin menu Admin Icon.
  2. Select the Managers sub-page.
  3. Locate the manager account that you want to unlink, and select Remove access in the "Actions" column.
  4. A dialogue will appear with a preview of how your account will be affected by the unlinking action. After you've reviewed the changes, and if you approve, select Unlink.

Troubleshooting

  • If the "Unlink" option is grayed out or you encounter errors, ensure you have the necessary administrative privileges in the manager account.
  • A Google Ads account or a manager account can only have one direct manager. If you receive an error indicating the "maximum number of managers reached" or a hierarchy conflict, it means the account (or its parent manager account) is already managed by another manager account directly above it. You'll need to resolve this conflict first. Learn more About the account map or Viewing hierarchy for your manager account to understand the current structure.
  • If child accounts of a manager account you are trying to link are already linked to the target parent manager account, the entire child manager account can't be linked until those individual child accounts are unlinked from the target parent manager account.
  • You must be logged in with an email address that has admin-level access to the specific Google Ads client account. If your current email doesn't have admin access, you'll need to log in with an admin account or ask an existing admin to grant your email admin privileges or perform the unlinking.
  • If you have the correct permissions but still face issues, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or attempt the process in an incognito or private browsing window.
