Setup Consent Studio to obtain user consent

To capture valuable insights while protecting user privacy, you need to collect consent from your website users. We recommend you use a Consent Management Platform (CMP) or work with your Content Management System (CMS) to collect consent and send it to Google.

Step 1 of 4: Set up a consent banner

  1. First, ensure that you have a Consent Studio user account. You can create a new user account using our registration form. You may also log in using your Google or Microsoft account.
  2. If you created an account using our registration form, you'll be asked to confirm your email address by selecting the link that will be sent to you shortly thereafter. After logging in with your verified account, you can register your first domain with Consent Studio.
  3. When registering a domain, enter the domain name without “”.

To proceed, it's necessary to test whether the Consent Studio systems can access your domain. This allows the system to periodically detect the cookies you use on your website and monitor if it's working properly. You may need to allowlist Consent Studio accessing your domain.

  1. Next, choose the languages in which you want your banner to appear.

  2. Select your preferred method for consent banner installation:
    • I am comfortable installing Consent Studio myself: Complete the installation independently
    • Please help me with the installation: Receive assistance from our Consent Studio team
    • Invite my team, they will do it for me: Invite one of your in-house developers

  1. After registering, you'll be directed to the Consent Studio dashboard’s home page where you can view real-time status updates from our service.

Now that you've registered your domain with Consent Studio, 3 important steps must be completed:

Step 2 of 4: Configure the banner

Now that you have completed your domain registration with Consent Studio, it's time to configure the settings. Consent Studio offers multiple settings panels in their dashboard.

In the sidebar on the left side of the Consent Studio dashboard, you'll find 3 important configuration panels:

  • General Settings: Manage your consent banner, integrations, consent modes, active languages, and consent sharing. You can also control Professional features like consent reprompting and first-party consent cookies.
  • Translations: Adjust the translations used within this platform.
  • Styling: Customize the appearance of your consent banner, toggle, cookie overview, and other Consent Studio components.

Learn more about configuration panels in the Consent Studio Help Center.

Note: Ensure your banner settings comply with the requirements in the Google EU User Consent Policy (EUUCP).

Step 3 of 4: Configure the scanner

Consent Studio offers automatic scans of your domain in order to detect the cookies and external sources that are used on your website and to monitor the status of your implementation of our consent management platform.

By default, Consent Studio only scans your homepage. Follow this guide to extend the list of pages that Consent Studio should scan.

It isn't required for Consent Studio to scan every page of your website, as the process would be inefficient. To learn more about this concept, refer to the “Which pages should I add?” section of the scanner documentation.

Step 4 of 4: Set up consent mode

The Consent Studio CMP dashboard’s installation panel provides the latest methods of installing the cookie consent banner on your website. Installation instructions are below.

Set up using Google Tag Manager

  1. Open Google Tag Manager and navigate to your container.
  2. In “Tags”, click New and Name the tag.
  3. Select Tag Configuration > Discover more tag types in the Community Template Gallery.
  4. From the gallery, search for and install "Consent Studio CMP" by Vallonic.
  5. You may want to alter the default settings of the Consent Studio tag. Learn more about How to install Consent Studio on Google Tag Manager.
  6. Select Add > Triggering.
  7. Select Consent Initialization - All Pages.
  8. Select Save.
  9. Test your container by selecting Preview in the top right corner.
  10. Publish your container.

Set up using another platform or directly from your website’s code

  1. Login to your Consent Studio dashboard, then go to the Installation panel to verify if there’s a direct setup method for your platform.
  2. If there is no direct setup method, use the general Consent Studio code snippet. Remember to replace “[your domain here]” with your actual domain, like “example.com”.
<script src="https://consent.studio/[YOUR DOMAIN HERE]/banner.js"></script>
  • If you use a website builder, review their documentation to find out how to implement code in the <head> tag of each page. Otherwise, skip to step 3.
  1. In the <head> tag of each page, paste the following code followed by the CMP script you copied in step 1 at the very top of the head tag. If you're using a website builder, refer to step 2.
This is critical in order to ensure the CMP functions properly.

<script>

// Define dataLayer and the gtag function.

window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];

function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}

// Set default consent for specific regions according to your requirements

gtag('consent', 'default', {

'ad_storage': 'denied',

'ad_user_data': 'denied',

'ad_personalization': 'denied',

'analytics_storage': 'denied',

'regions':[<list of ISO 3166-2 region codes>]

});

// Set default consent for all other regions according to your requirements

gtag('consent', 'default', {

'ad_storage': 'denied',

'ad_user_data': 'denied',

'ad_personalization': 'denied',

'analytics_storage': 'denied'

});

</script>

<!-- PASTE YOUR CONSENT STUDIO CMP CODE SNIPPET HERE -->

<!-- Do not forget to replace [YOUR DOMAIN HERE] with your website's actual domain. ->
